Chiefs Cassel or Sanchez? - Page 36

I realize that we are where we are, but the more I see about Sanchez, the more I'm afraid that a few years down the road, we may look back and realize that we passed up on the franchise guy that we've been looking for. I know that Cassel played ok last year, but is he a franchise guy? ...likely not. Thoughts?

Nothing new, ESPN was just blowing some smoke.

Bob Glauber of Newsday reporting that the Chiefs aren't in any hurry to offer him a long term deal yet.

I'm not sure what the issue is with people here. The status of the CBA, combined with the salary cap status of the Chiefs, means that there's no need to rush about a contract for Cassel. The Chiefs can afford a 14+ million dollar test drive, where many other teams wouldn't have had that luxury.

There's really no need to read anything more into it until the draft happens. Then, if the Chiefs draft a QB at #3, this becomes a thread worth revisiting. Until then, it's really not much of a story, even in comparison to Whitlock's bleatings about Johnson and Waters.

It's definitely worth talking about as long as certain people here continue to claim that Cassel is the future and it's not worth talking about.

It would be worth talking about if it clearly meant something more definitive than "No long-term contract yet". Right now, it doesn't.

I'm not the one suggesting it means something definitive. There is a large contingent of people here that have said Cassel IS the future simply because we traded for him. They have suggested it doesn't matter that he hasn't signed a contract.

He hasn't signed a contract. That, in and of itself, means nothing definitive, you're absolutely right.

By the same token, the fact that we traded for him - when combined with the fact that he doesn't have a contract - does not mean anything definitive either. Despite the protestations from the "Cassel is our QB" crowd.

Other than to send a signal to everyone involved that he's the long-term answer, there isn't one.

I'm sure Cassel and his agent are tried to get paid like an elite quarterback. Unless Cassel gives the Chiefs a decent discount, there is no reason to bear the risk associated with a long-term contract that he may be a bust. This is probably one of the toughest contracts to negotiate in the history of the league given the peculiar circumstances.

All the more reason to dismiss the notion that Cassel is our QB and there's no other possibilities.
