Kiper (via way of Teicher) talks Clausen to KC...

http://chiefsblog.kansascity.com/?q=node/1217

It’s worth considering but . . .

It’s not likely to happen. Still, the tie between Charlie Weis and his former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, is a strong one. It’s strong enough that it’s fair to raise the question: Would the Chiefs, with Weis now running their offense, draft Clausen?

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper raised the question himself today when I asked him about the players the Chiefs might reasonably consider (more on this later in the Kansas City Star and on kansascity.com) with their top draft pick, which is fifth.

“Charlie Weis is in Kansas City and Jimmy Clausen (will be) there at five. Do they take Clausen and deal Cassel to Denver, say? There’s always going to be talk about that if Clausen is there because Charlie Weis is a huge Jimmy Clausen fan, as everybody knows.’’

As I mentioned earlier, don’t count on it. The Chiefs have too much invested in Matt Cassel to go in another direction now. They also appear to like Brodie Croyle too much to go for Clausen or any other quarterback in an early round.

But because of Clausen’s past with Weis, the possibility might be slim but it can’t be ignored.

i don't expect them to trade cassel if they draft clausen unless some team really knocks their socks off with an offer.

draft Clausen and let him sit on the bench while Cassel gets another year.

If Cassel plays well then Chiefs will have a Charger-esque type decision the next year.

Yeah, you can't get stuck with Clausen, Brodie and a scrub of the year guy.

If BRC's report is true it's a definite possibility because Cassel isn't his "guy".

According to BRC's report, it also doesn't appear that Croyle is anybody's guy. Why not trade him to Buffalo so he can be reunited with Chan? Not that he'd necessarily be the QBOTF in Buffalo, but he's familiar with Chan and on some level, more than any other Bill, with his system.

Hence the reason why I'm not opposed to getting Clausen, It sucks that the guy is blackballed, but if KC has contingency plan with Clausen as the QBOTF then pull the trigger. Furthermore, If Weis isn't convinced that Cassel is the right man for the job then erase that doubt, and get the player he wants. Funny thing is Pioli probably gave a pitch that Cassel is a young Tom Brady, but he probably gave him an eyebrow raise, and said "Scott, get me my boy Jimmy Clausen"

Could you even imagine the media meltdown if we actually drafted him?

Personally I don't think it would be a bad idea and I'm not one that is ready to hang Cassel from the nearest tree. I wasn't as open to it a month ago or so, but at the end of the day I've pretty much decided that the problem San Diego had with Brees & Rivers, would be a good one to have. Same scenario with Warner & Leinart, Montana & Young. IF the structure of Cassel's contract really was set up to be able to cut loose of him after 2010, without much of a cap hit, they need to do what is in the best LONG TERM interest of the Chiefs. It may not be popular among the "win now" crowd but they'll forget what side of it they were on when we are winning playoff games because we have a Pro Bowl QB.

Before one of you bass-turds says it, I'm certainly not saying Cassel is Warner, Montana or Brees.

Doesn't a "trade Cassel, draft Clausen" have the same feel to it as a "trade Dorsey for picks" idea? Smells the same.

No.

We actually saw Dorsey improve in spite of the crap surrounding him.

Cassel, on the other hand, we saw take strides backwards as we watched improvement around him.

See the difference?

We should just stop being masochists and just quit talking about drafting Jimmy Clausen.

It will hurt too bad when he drops to 15 or even 20 and we dont make a move.

I hope to god he goes before we pick so it wont eat at us like Im sure Sanchez will.

Cassel will be 28 when the season starts. Clausen will be 22. It wouldn't be that crazy to groom Clausen for 2 years and then look to move a 30 year old Cassel.

What's the down side? If Cassel sucks, you've got a plan. If Cassel plays well, you've got all kinds of trade options.

I'm not pulling for this to happen, but I wouldn't be upset if it did.

No one ever suggested this last year, BTW.
