Cubs Hire Sveum
The Chicago Cubs hired Dale Sveum as the team's new manager Thursday.
The Cubs had offered the job to the former Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach on Wednesday. A press conference is scheduled for Friday at Wrigley Field to introduce Sveum. Sveum, who turns 48 next week, was also reportedly a serious candidate to become the Boston Red Sox manager. The Red Sox had not officially offered the job to Sveum, FOX Sports reported Wednesday. New Cubs president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer were with the Red Sox when Sveum was the team's third base coach in 2004 and 2005. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/C...anager-111711/ |

I'm excited to see what this new management can do, but I don't expect the Cubs to be competitive next year.

The only thing I know about this guy is that Red Sox fans hated him because he was such a terrible 3B coach, and they booed him during intros to the 2004 WS.

He was a medium power hitter for the Brewers in the late 80's but broke his leg in a collision. He somehow held on for another decade after that, even a member of the '98 Yankees. Played for LaRussa, Leyland, Pinella and Torre.

Seems like an underwhelming hire but we'll see how he does.

Sveum was plan C. Plan A and B took themselves out.
Sveum was voted top managerial prospect in 2003. And he's been under some of the best mangers this game has had to offer. I'm eager to see what he can do. |

I think he's a good baseball guy just hasn't proven himself as a manager yet and I guess I expected more of a "splash" to be made... but like you said, the first 2 choices were out. What strikes me funny is that Epstein said he didn't want Sandberg because he wanted a guy with experience... so he hired a guy who's managed like 15 games. Technically that is experience I guess.

His name looks like a combination of "semen" and "cum"

Jeez, you guys complained about "Patriots West" just because you got Pioli, Vrabel, and Cassel. The friggng Cubs are already turning into "Red Sox West". Good luck with that, Chicago...

Yeah but we'd trade them for Bellichick, Brady and Welker. We're just never happy.
