Dorsey using comp picks to gain edge in draft

http://archive.greenbaypressgazette....ensatory-picks

Packers employed this strategy for years and it's paid off bigtime. They've let big talents go in order to gain comp picks without overpaying.

With their comp picks, they've recently acquired solid talents such as Mike Daniel, Davon House, Josh Sitton and this year Richard Rodgers.
They've also drafted Matt Hasselbeck and Marco Rivera in the past using comp picks.

Love this strategy. Having 4 picks in the top 100 gives you one extra chance to hit on a player, or use a 3rd or 4th to move up to get a player you like without losing value.
The best drafting teams don't even have that great of a positive draft ratio. More picks you have the better statically chance to hit.

Dorsey drafted Knile Davis with our 3rd rd comp pick in 2013. I expect more to come via this strategy.
Probably get a 3rd for Tamba next season.

Can't get a 3rd for Tamba if you cut him. They have to be lost as free agents. Also a big reason you don't try to sign a bunch of free agents if you've lost some quality ones, because it could nullify the comps.

You should understand how comp picks work before you go talking about them.

Over time if you keep exchanging 1st round talent (what it takes to get a 3rd round comp pick) for 4th round talent (what a 3rd round comp pick really is), you get worse, not better. AJ smith used to go on and on in S.D. about his comp picks and he got lucky a few yrs but over a several year span he let enough talent walk to get him run outta town. If a football team is actively talking about comp picks Id take that as a bullshit excuse to justify not spending money they should spend.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the Dolphins interested in trading a 3rd for Albert and Dorsey held out for a 2nd which never came? So now he'll potentially get a 3rd round comp pick, which is worse than any 3rd the Dolphins could have offered and can't be traded, but he gained an edge?

It's always best to let proven players go for cheaper, unknown players.

If you can draft.

Fisher has issues but Albert is a walking injury. 2 major injuries the last 2 seasons causing him to miss considerable time.
That's not worth the investment man

I thought it was the right move to franchise Albert.
I thought it was the right move to not take Miami's 3rd round pick for him.
Getting the comp pick for him this year lessens the pain, and I like comp picks.

I think the goal of any NFL team these days is to not get old. You get old by paying free agents big money, or resigning players who are approaching 30 big contracts. I don't think we should automatically try and get comp picks by watching our young talent leave. We must keep players like Hudson and Houston, they are just entering their prime. That said, its stupid to break the bank on Albert who's already 30 or guys like Asamoah who are nothing more than adequate at their positions.

How many of the Chiefs early-mid 2000's stud lineup of OL was in their low 20's?

2/5?

Albert was by far the best lineman this team had and a top LT in the league. The grand master plan for his replacement was a OT from the MAC... what a joke.

We got Roaf for a conditional 3rd round pick. NO wanted to move him because of his $4.25MM that was due to him on a 6 year, 27MM contract. That's peanuts.

That's also over a decade ago with a smaller salary cap...

Since 2002, the salary cap has nearly doubled.

How was it the right move to pass on Miami's 3rd rounder last year (in a WR deep draft) so that we could have a 3rd round comp pick this year? It's a lower pick and it's not tradeable. We could have used that pick last year.

Don't forget that we got to play Albert all of last year, and still basically get a 3rd round pick for him. Miami was offering nothing. We had no clue who would have been available with that pick.

We got a year out of Albert and dick to show for it. Orrrrr we could have stuck Fisher at LT right away and not wasted his first year at RT.

No shit we didn't have a clue. We also didn't have a 2nd round pick. That 3rd could have helped immensely.
