Raiders/Broncos Epic Fear of the Chiefs/Mahomes

Apparently no one cares enough about the Chargers to fear/feel anything, but the Raiders and Broncos are scared shitless...

The current obstacle: Patrick Mahomes.

It doesn’t appear he’s going anywhere for some time.

Mahomes is the NFL’s weekly example of an electric current charging across a 100-yard field.

It’s not so much about protecting a quarterback — although that helps — as it was against the likes of Buchanan and Bell and Lanier.
Rather, it’s about getting to one.

Which, when it comes to Mahomes, can feel hopeless at times.

In four career starts (and wins) against the Raiders, he is 82-of-135 passing for 1,194 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception.
Gulp, is right.

“Obviously, the Chiefs are the team we haven’t been able to beat in the division lately,” said Davis, whose team is 2-12 against Kansas City since 2013. “It’s one of the reasons we drafted edge rushers (in Clelin Ferrell and Maxx Crosby) last year. We need more of them. We need another guy up the middle against Mahomes. We need linebackers to hold the edge. We need guys who can cover (Chiefs tight end) Travis Kelce and all their speed outside.

Both teams have QB issues and average defenses.

The above article is great, and talks about how countering Patrick Mahomes is quickly becoming the rival AFCW teams top priority.

This article talks about how Drew Lock needs to develop into a great QB for the Broncos to have a realistic chance at competing with the Chiefs. It's a pretty good article - and features this section.

Mahomes is Michael Jordan great.

It concludes that the Broncos need Fangio to develop a 49ers like defense and for Lock to develop into a better QB than Jimmy G. If Lock can be a great QB (while not Mahomes great), that can be what the Broncos need to compete.

This puts the heat on Elway a bit. One wonders if Elway's status as a Denver legend has insulated him a bit from the Broncos recent struggles. Not a lot of GM's would have a stretch like this without being in the hot seat, but outside of fan forums, not a lot of the heat has been directed at Elway, that may change if the Broncos continue getting routed by KC. It has a few gems, honestly the following quote is honestly a dream come true.

It’s poetic justice then for the Chiefs that the Broncos GM feeling the wrath of Mahomes is none other than John Elway. The MVP quarterback is 5-0 against the Broncos, and his Chiefs team hasn’t lost a game by more than 7 points since Mahomes became the QB.

Hilariously, they then come to this conclusion - and you have to hope Fangio feels the same way.

That’s why it’s more crucial than ever this offseason that Elway fortify the defense - particularly at cornerback and interior d-lineman (preferably an inside pass-rusher...or two).

Because the only way to stop the Chiefs is to stop Mahomes.

And that means a solid defense top to bottom. Although the offense clearly needs a lineman and probably another speedy receiver, it’s time for Elway to focus again on the D this offseason.

It is a new era, and what an amazing feeling that is.

And yet Trevor Siemian had slightly better numbers than Lock at the same their respective careers...You're right to not be convinced of anything. IMO, his ceiling is Jay Cutler.

I'm not a Lock defender nor a buyer. I originally had him in the Ryan Leaf category of bustability so to speak.

He's just doing better than I thought he would, has a lot of raw ability, & is still young so it's possible he could have a good career.

I ventured over to a donk forum before we played them the 2nd time last year. There were many of their delusional fans that said they would take Drew Lock over Mahomes. Lock might develop into a decent QB. Maybe even a good one. Hes only played 5 games. So a lot remains to be seen with him. But There is a different between a "good" QB and a QB like Mahomes.

No matter what the Raiders do on offense they have no hope beating us with Derrick Carr. They want to build a defense to counter Mahomes but they better not neglect the offense because Mahomes can eventually pick apart any Defense.

The Rams last year beat us 51-50 and thats where the Raiders are going to have to get to.

That was more of Andy’s fault than the defense. Mid management of the clock knowing how the defense was playing.

Eric Berry - playing in his first game of the season I believe - yelling at other defensive players to direct them where to be? A receiver going completely uncovered on a blown assignment for the game-winning 2pt conversion?

Are we really still blaming Andy Reid for stuff like this? I thought we had gotten past such nonsense.

Bob Sutton was responsible for really every single loss last season.

Andy was the one that kept Gramps far beyond his expiration date though so I can see the argument in the big picture.
