Playcalling at End of Regulation

Why throw the ball from the 4 yard line on 2nd down?

When we get 1st and goal, we have them by the balls. We run on 1st down and forced them to call a timeout. Great execution.

Should have run again. Instead, they throw. Here's the problem with passing there. If nobody is open, the QB is basically forced to take a sack or throw the ball away stopping the clock. In fact, that's what happened. Mahomes gets sacked and that creates a difficult 3rd down from further away.

On 3rd down, he doesn't want an incompletion and runs the clock down and fumbles.

The smart play is to run the ball on 2nd down from the 4 yard line. If you score (God forbid) you have the lead. If you get stopped, even better. You can burn more clock.

They were so afraid to score quickly that they forgot to score at all.

Instead, the narrative is about end of 1st half. No telling how the game changes if they kick a FG before halftime. However, they could have won the game before overtime.

Also, earlier in that drive, Mahomes and Hardman both run out of bounds on 1st down. Thus stopping the clock.

Just poor management of that entire finish.

I've always been a take the score when you can because you may not get it.

Take all of the things they did WELL against the Bills and throw it in the trash. They did almost everything wrong they could have at the end of this one.

Even on third down I still expected Mahomes to throw a TD

Last week everyone was complaining because Reid took the ball out of Mahomes' hand - and put it into Blake Bell's.

This week, Andy tried to mix it up, but still got it horribly wrong.

I think he needs another Brad Childress type presence on the team with fresh ideas and a voice that Andy listens to.

It was a bed shitting plain and simple.

Andy did what we normally call for him to do. He put the ball in Mahomes' hands and trusted him to make the play and the right decision.

He made the wrong one every time.

Would I have preferred they run the ball at the end of regulation in hindsight? Yes.

But I would be a hypocrite if I blamed Andy for putting the ball in Pat's hands after asking him to do that in previous situations.

Just needed to execute better.

That's the issue. Mahomes has to take a sack or throw an incompletion if you pass. That's the one scenario where you run and take it out of his hands.

By running on 2nd down, you have a more manageable play on 3rd down. Instead, they basically forced Mahomes to take a sack.

I feel like you just throw the incompletion at that point. The goal is to score a TD and taking a 5 yard sack when you are at the 4 is not ideal. The Bengals would have needed a TD with maybe 30 seconds left and 0 timeouts.

That's assuming you score a TD, which wasn't a given.

If he throws it away on those downs and we have to settle for a FG, they get a chance to try and take the lead in a tie ball game with like a minute left.

Exactly. An incompletion on 2nd down would be disastrous. Even worse than Mahomes taking a sack on 2nd down.

I guess I don't care so much about that one. We put the ball in the hands of our best player and it backfired. That's going to happen occasionally and he wins those far more than he loses.

I'm a bit mystified by the overtime possession, though. I'm not sure why they decided to make Demarcus Robinson the featured player on the first two plays. I feel like you should ride Kelce and Hill as your two can't-miss guys in overtime of a conference championship game.

It's Andy. He was bound to **** up a game like this at some point. He wasn't just going to never do that again. You kinda gotta live with bad Andy to reap the rewards of good Andy.
