Old Mercury Outboards

Anyone have any interest in the old Mercury Inline Six outboards? I have a collection of motors and parts that I'm going to be getting rid of after my flood.

Yeah, most of this stuff is older than the people here. 1966 thru 1988 two strokes.

If you like turning wrenches and tinkering with some of these legendary motors of the prior century, send me a message or response and I'll see what I have.

Also have a collection of 1980s CoinOp Arcade stuff. Mostly Williams and Atari. Some Midway. Lots of boards and parts.

If this is the wrong group for this, please move it to the appropriate area.

Thanks,

CrayzKirk

Thread title got my attention, since my bass boat has an old Mercury outboard.

200 efi, but it is a lot later than what you are talking about.

Only had 101 hrs on it when I got it, even though it is a 95, but finally have it pretty well sorted out.

They don't seem that old; sometimes it seems like just yesterday I was learning to ski behind the 66 1100SS and then I realize that it was 57 years ago.

Yeah, these have carburetors, distributors and you premix the gas and oil. The later models use alternator driven ignition systems.

The V6 is a great motor, you might want to check out the Scream & Fly site.

Those are a whole lot simpler than this EFI motor with it's oil mixing system.

In fact, a lot of the discussion I have read on them has been about discarding the oil system and going to pre mixing the oil/gas.

I was very tempted to do that, but seem to have it working right now. This is boat number eleven for me but only my second two stroke. I will say this though, it does have some serious power at WOT.

Yep, twice the power of what my old stuff. A lot like newer cars, a lot of special tools and training required to work on them.

My fishing boat has a 75hp 84 L4 and my ski boat has a 1500 72 L6 (115hp). They have a very unique sound and pound for pound still stack up with newer motors of similar power. Fishing boat is currently undergoing floor replacement; they put unsealed plywood and covered it with carpet and called it waterproof! In a boat!

All of them are towers of power. L6 is short for Inline Six.

And while these are old, most of them are low hours. Typically, they require a hone, re-ring, seals and a gasket set. Aluminum blocks with cast iron sleeves.

I'll probably check at a few places down south. More lakes and older marinas down by lake of the ozarks. Longview isn't old enough...

Came back from Christmas to find a water line had ruptured under the sink. It split vertically so that it sprayed water for two days from the back of the house to the front door. Flooded the hallway, front room, dining room, kitchen, parts of two bedrooms, half the basement, a two car garage. When I came home there were frozen waterfalls around the back 1/2 of my house. Hardwood floors, carpet, furniture, etc.

Cleanup crew just piled everything where ever they could find a place for it.

I need some football for distraction.

I'm too old for this crap. And I have way too much crap.

Sorry you asked?

Damn dude. Hate to hear that.

Now that I'm scared shitless, I'm going to think long and hard about buying a leak detecting water valve.

Always shut off your water if you're going to be out of town for a period of time

Yeah, me too... Especially with the design of the water pipes in my house; in the garage, into an overhang and up into the kitchen. It probably froze in the garage and the pressure ruptured the pipe. I've seen ones that will signal your phone and allow you to turn it off remotely. I'm thinking something automatic.

It happens, I drank too much wine (just once) a few days afterwards. Then I had the same problem and a bad hangover. I've been meaning to go through my stuff however this is a real trial.

My fondest memories of old Mercury engines was my dad finally getting the cock sucker to start. I'll never own one and I never have.

"Tie a rope on it and use it for a ****ing anchor"

True story, spoken by my grandfather after dad couldn't get it to start going duck hunting. And he never cussed. Might have been a Johnson though.

P. S. Sorry to hear Kirk.
