Are insults against friends/family members off limits?

Recently, this has come up in DC, but we've always set rules forum-wide rather than forum at a time. The entire place is so filled with personal attacks that I'm not sure any efforts could ever make conversation in there civil. But the question is, from a moderation standpoint, are personal attacks against family members over the line?

Depending on the answer to this question, we may add another bannable offense to the list. Poll to follow.

Listen, most folks who have been here for more than a month know who the crap disturbers are in D.C., and even in the Lounge. Put those folks on ignore and go about your lives.

This potential bannable offense is just another speed limit.... something that saves us from ourselves. A McDonald's "the coffee is f***ing hot, don't spill it on yourself" sort of warning.

It's really not that complicated for many people like me and you who use the ignore function or can skim past certain posts and arguments, but many other people can't resist replying and making it worse.

I guess on one hand you get what you deserve.... if you respond to it, you're just part of the problem. The problem with that, however, is that it clutters the board for the rest of us, because you can only ignore users, not every response to that user.

Speaking of that.....I'd rather see the outrage against the blantant use of the word "reerun".

I've used it before or used other words to garner the same effect but something occurred to me. People on this very board, some of whom I consider friends have children, brothers, sisters etc that are mentally or physically challenged. I'll wager its alot more hurtful to them when one of use drops the R-bomb than when someone says your wife snorts during sex.

I would point out that his nasty little pal failpass at least has the balls to post his shitty remarks in the public forum.

Hopefully this will encourage another 10 or 20 votes out our ACLU crowd, because dammit, this kind of upstanding behavior really should be encouraged! It'll bring in just the sort of BB members that the mods now seem to cherish.

Let me add since I was part of this whole thing that if I thought vali was joking around I would have just ignored it. That has to be factored in.

Yeah, I went through and read some of them -- and neg repped vailpass for being such a jackass. Totally uncool.

But -- and please remember that I understand where you're coming from, see your point, and know why this is an issue -- I still don't think it's ban worthy.

If it were me, I'd just put him on ignore. The guy is simply not worth your time or effort, and obviously has issues that he thinks he can resolve by insulting others on the Internet.

But, again, the whole reason ChiefsPlanet was started was to allow what amounts to a free-for-all where we can discuss politics, drop the occasional (or frequent) profanity, start poop threads, and just generally allow people the freedom to express themselves as they see fit.

Yes, the ignore feature, profanity filters, and a few rules have been developed along the way. But for the most part, what makes this place so wonderful is that the moderators have an extraordinarily-light banning policy.

Once again, the crap vailpass has posted is the very pinnacle of raging douchebaggery and asshattery. I get it.

But a quick trip to your profile to add him to your ignore list would pretty much solve the issue, would it not? Why change the entire policy of the board -- and, thus, the board itself?

As I mentioned, the poll was just to kind of "capture the pulse" of how people felt about it. We'll take it into consideration.
