Opinions on Sleep Number beds

I'm looking into possibly getting one over the next 2 months. My bed now is awful and I need to upgrade.

Does anyone have one? Does the bed sleep warm? I'm looking for a mattress that won't hold heat like it's Disney World in July.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

I was talking to KC Tattoo's statement that he uses an air mattress, which I take to mean one of those things that you blow up with a vaccuum.

You can look at it 2 ways.

Yes, they are definitely overpriced for what you are actually getting. A little time spent doing your homework and getting a build-a-bed customized individually for you will end up with higher grade materials and a superior product for about 1/3 to no more than half the price. So, in part it's a convenience charge.

On the flipside, they're a good bed, in general. You spend roughly a third of your life sleeping, so how much is a good night's sleep worth ? People spend far less time in their car and don't blink for a second at spending 10 or 20 times more.

This is especially important if you and your significant other differ greatly on desired firmness. This was the primary reason for us getting a king, dual-control Sleep Number. Our only other real option was separate beds. For those of you that know the numbers, my wife averages 15. I average 60.

Good points on both of these.

I love my air bed. But don't get a "Sleep Number" bed...way over priced. I bought a similar type but doesn't have a number. You really don't need a "Number". Blow it up until it feels comfortable. The dual controls are nice as well.

I think the brand is "Comforte Aire". Not sure. The Queen was ~$900.

We've had ours for about 7 years. One of the best investments we ever made. The wife sets her side to 35 and I set mine to 60-65. It doesn't sleep hot.

If the sides are adjusted differently is there a "seam" in the middle of the bed?

To some extent - yes. Here's my expertly-drawn diagram of how it's constructed:

Blue = air mattresses (basically just heavy-duty versions of the same thing you'd buy for $40 at a store)
Green = foam dividers (1-2" foam border that keeps the sides from ever collapsing too much and separates the two chambers through the middle)

It's all covered with a fairly thick piece of foam on top, so it's not as obvious as you'd expect. If you have both sides relatively high and near the same level, you don't notice the divider at all. If both sides were relatively low, you'd notice it a lot. My wife usually has hers at around 60, and I have mine around 45. When we first got it, I noticed the seam a bit when rolling from one side to another, but these days I don't really notice it at all.

That said, the bed definitely does make you feel like there's an "ideal" area on each side since the closer you are to the edges of each air mattress, the more you are likely to feel like you'll roll to the center. That's exaggerating quite a bit, but if you're the type to cuddle all night, you'd probably be better off with a bed that isn't divided by side.

It's fine. For sexy time you just have to put the mattresses on similar hardness.

Who wants to cuddle all night anyway? I need space.
