4th Year Grade For Dick Vermeil

Well DV is probably the nicest damn guy to have the head coaches title in the NFL but putting aside the fact that he is so likeable how would you grade him now into his 4th season.

Our high powered offense the past couple years was exciting and a lot of fun to watch but now in his 4th season we have yet to win a playoff game and our defense has been the worst in the NFL over that 4 year stretch. We are now a very old offense by NFL standards and our defense is showing no signs of becoming adequate before most of the offenses key players get too old.

It is very likely that he leaves after this season leaving us with the worst defense in the NFL and a offense that is very long in the tooth on top of that a well below average job in the draft the past few years leaving us very little up and coming talent.

Assuming this season ends up 8-8 or worse and a non-playoff season how would you rate the acquisition of DV that cost us a 2nd and 3rd round pick on top of a team that will most likely be in a struggling rebuilding phase?

I'm not really looking to turn this into a rip DV session as I really like the guy but just looking for a honest opinion as to how you view this past four season process.

As for a 4-year grade -- incomplete. Kinda hard to grade a season that just started.

If I were to give him a grade for the first 3, I'd give them a solid C. Same old mediocrity as always.

I have loved watching what DV brought to this team. They have been a pure joy to watch with Dante on ST's and the offense the past couple of years. And we had a chance to go to the Super Bowl. For the better part of last season, it was a real chance too.

My only negative thought on DV is this.... that we may have too many "profile" guys on this team. At the risk of sounding like Whitlock, I really think we could use some guys on defens that were just down right nasty at times.

I'll give him high marks though, cause the Grbac and players quitting was really one of the low points of my 35 years of being a Chiefs fan. Don't ever want to go back to those days.

I more or less agree with everything here. If I had to grade DV on what he has accomplished thus far, a trip back to the playoffs after a long hiatus insures I don't vote below a C. However I don't have to grade him right now, and really am not in the right frame of mind to do so objectively.

I think there is a real decent chance that the two teams we played so far have average to below average offenses and if that turns out to be the case I think it is quite possible this defense is every bit as bad as last years.

If the Donks and Panthers turn out to have top 5 type of offenses then I would agree with you.

I am disturbed by the fact that last year we were 2-4 against winning teams and now we are 0-2. Maybe we are not as good as we think we are.

One thing you have to remember about the Panthers, while they were not an offensive powerhouse last year, they still found away to put the points on the board that they needed. That is a team that just finds a way to win. There were questions about wether or not Jake could carry that team if the need arose, he proved once or twice that he could. Stephen Davis and DeShaun Foster are great backs, Steve Smith is a great WR, and Ricky Proehl and Muhammed are no slouches.

They may not be the '99 Rams, but they know how to get the job done.

After reading the thread header more carefully, and going with your assumption that we finish 8-8 or worse (which I am not at all convinced will happen yet) I'd give the whole DV tenure a C.

F for decision making

F for having NO BALLS

F for failing to recognize and compensate for glaring weaknesses that everybody but him can see.

F for squandering the offense last year. Now the window's closed.

F for waiving Super Bowl dreams at us while only being the second coming of Marty.

F for sucking the life out me in ONLY THE SECOND WEEK

if we don't make the playoffs this year: C- (he get's credit for rebuilding Marty's mess)

if we make the playoffs and lose: C+ (got to win a playoff game)

if we win 1 game: B (we improved every year, not bad Dick)

if we advance to the AFC Championship or beyond: A

His record is 27-24 so if I had to grade then it is a C. If we win the Super Bowl then it is an A.
