Not only that, but it encourages a fascination by girls with the dangerous/dark boys. I did, however, get very disturbing notions about gender roles and sexual power relationships from it. On top of that, the writing is atrocious.

That being said, it turned a lot of kids on to reading.

I've read the first book. The abstinence message, imo, is from people taking the fact that Meyer is Mormon and drawing conclusions from that. It's overhyped and an attack that's really just based on assumptions about Meyer's faith, not from the reality of the text itself. I read the first book and later found out that the author was Mormon. I actually thought it was bizarre and intriguing that she was, because the book seemed so un-Mormon and erotically charged.

It doesn't lack eroticism, it just lacks grown-up eroticism. And it doesn't have the homo-eroticism that is common in the genre.
