Goodell and the changes in pre/reg season.

Just some junk from around the net:

Quote:
NFL commissioner: 4 exhibition games not needed

Associated Press

New York -- Commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL no longer needs four exhibition games in the preseason, but the league should change its offseason training programs.
NFL and union officials discussed adding two games to the regular season when they met Wednesday for their first negotiating session since February. Under the proposal, the schedule would switch from four exhibition and 16 regular-season games to two and 18.
Players have expressed concerns about an increase in injuries. Goodell said Thursday that even players don't like the four exhibition games -- and fans certainly don't now that most starters play sparingly during the preseason.
Um, if they have a ****ing clue in life they do, Sparky.

You are still wrong in emphasizing even over odd. There's absolutely no reason the NFL cannot add just ONE non- conference game to the schedule.

Preseason games do matter because they reintroduce the players to game conditions after 6 or 7 months of not playing in one. But 2 preseason games are enough IMO.

If they were smart, they'd add more pre-season games. It would be best for the players and the fans wouldn't know the difference anyhow. Or, just randomly declare a couple of games throughout the year as "test games", but do it after-the-fact. That would be perfect. Neither the players or the owners or the fans or anybody would know whether or not the game counted until after the final whistle.

But this would be the last adjustment made to the schedule. IMO
Should of been the adjustment made the first time. IMO

A fan, season ticket holder, should not be expected to pay full price for games that do not matter in the record book or in the W/L columns.
I understand the need for the team to play as a team against another team in a true scrimmage environment. We are not expected to pay full price for training camp or the scrimmage game against the vikings. We should not have to pay full price for those games either. To me preseason games are merely, practice, scrimmage games.

You mean back in the day, when they initially went from an 8 game schedule to a 10 game schedule, they should have gone right to 18?

Or when they went from 10 to 12?

Or 12 to 14?

Or 14 to 16.

I bet with every change, someone said this will be the last.

I believe when they went from 12 to 14 they also went to the 6 game preseason. That is when they should of made the change and left it alone. If they want to keep it at 16 I am fine with that.
If they do that then they should get rid of 2 of the preseason games.

the formation of actual divisions was in 1934 , with 5 times in 2 divisions which played twice that equal 10. you couldn't leave one extra because then you would be leaving team out that wouldn't have an opportunity to match it.

While I understand your point you must consider that teams that pay rent for the stadium don't get a preseason discount, the grounds crew and other operations people that work the stadium don't work for less, the electric and water rates are not billed at a reduced rate, and the cost of buying hot dogs, beer, soda, etc... to sell doesn't change.
In many cases the team pays for the TV production and/or broadcast time for the games an expense not realized during the regular season.
A preseason game is just as or more expensive to a team than a regular season game.
It is all about the business of the game.

Well, except for that damned overseas game they want to do. Somebody loses a home game over that as well.
