Is it uncommon to hire a new HC outside of an organization prior to the end of the season?

I know in the presser, when asked about the hiring timetable, Clark responded with the whole "we are worried about winning the game this week, and then the next...and the next" answer.

I ask because of the 'timing' aspect of the firing. I feel Pioli has someone on his short list and wants to get to them first before anyone else does. Funny how the Dolphins fired Tony a few hours later...

...is McDaniels THAT hot of a candidate?

Just my 2 cents...

You absolutely don't want Romeo Crennel running your football team unless you want a guy who caters to his players 24/7. We called it Club Romeo when he was here. Great DC, but don't give him the keys to the kingdom.

Eric Mangini, on the other hand, is definitely someone you should consider. EM is a polarizing figure amongst Browns fans, but plenty of us clear-headed fans recognized pretty damn quick his ability to instill toughness, discipline, and accountability in the locker room. EM shedded the roster of malcontented, me-first types, and began to turn the team around. His roster in year 2 (2010) was less on talent, and more on smart, heady, and tough football players. Our team was in EVERY game last year except EM's very last one. We played 8 eventual playoff teams in the first 9 weeks last year and we were 3-6 and held a 4th quarter lead in every game but two. We smoked the Saints and Patriots in consecutive weeks and if not for an OT fumble the following week would have taken down the Jets. Then we suffered several key injuries and only managed two more wins in the final seven weeks.

We finished 5-11 and Holmgren fired him for two reasons: 1) A differing football philosophy & 2) In Holmgren's words "we didn't win enough games". Now his replacement is proving to the doubters just how good of a coach he was while he was here.

Translation: Firing Mangini was a mistake. I firmly believe (much like his situation in NY) that if he was given more time in Cleveland that the Browns would be a consistent winner. Belichick only became a consistent winner with a franchise QB and quite frankly that's all Eric Mangini needs as well.

You guys have some solid pieces in place. EM loves to run the ball and play physical, smart 3-4 defense. Jamaal Charles and Eric Berry when healthy gives him that nucleus to build upon.

EM will be a successful head coach in the NFL. It's only a matter of if the franchise and fan base can recognize the method. The question in KC is whether he and Pioli have mended fences since the NE-NYJ Spygate days.

Finally, don't believe anything the media writes about him. They've got a burr in their saddle because he keeps EVERYTHING in house and never gives them the money quotes or fodder for a good story. If you want an honest assessment of Eric Mangini go to a blog called Cleveland Frowns.

I think the decision to fire Haley means that want to be able to be aggressive in finding his replacement. If the McDaniels thing was a done deal, Haley could have finnished the season.

I think keeping the 3-4 is a must, hell I would like to just keep Romeo as DC.

I'd be all for EM as the HC, I just want to see us actually have an OC, which is something we never had with Haley.

Guys, remember Marty was sitting with Clark during the game a few weeks ago.... Plus, he obviously still wants to coach, since he was coaching an "Pro" team. Hmmmm....

Just kidding. I don't think it will be Marty (And shouldn't be).
