Should Penn State Get the Death Penalty?

http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/481264...lege_football/

Looks like officials are going from Penn State to state pen. (Sorry, I couldn't help myself.)

What say ye? If so, for how long?

Penn State is a strong enough academic institution to continue to thrive without football. This isn't even in doubt.

Yes.

Get rid of the football program. And lighten up on the hyperbole. I don't care if "hundreds of thousands" of football fans are disappointed.

Penn State is an academic institution, and this entire mess shows that they forgot about this as their first and foremost identity.

I'm horrified by the things Sandusky did and the cover-up. It's sick. I just feel like something as severe as disbanding the football program entirely wouldn't accomplish anything besides punishing a lot of people that don't deserve it.

Just find out who the individuals were that covered this up and punish them to the furthest extent of the law. Take the Paterno statue down and let the school move on.

What was priority #1 at this university? Time to recalibrate. If that means neutering the program for a significant number of years--very minimum of five--great. But casting out the golden cow should definitively be on the table.

Time for that institution to wake the **** up.

What about the thousands of people like you that rely on Penn State alone because they're the only school able to offer the quality education at in-state tuition?

By the way, I agree on the Joe Pa statue. They have to tear that down if they want to start fresh. It's embarrassing that they would want to keep it there. Maybe they're just waiting for some more of the dust to settle. I would hope that's what's going on.
The powers that be need to step up and lay the blame where it belongs to insulate all of the decent people being negatively affected by guilt by association from the truly guilty. By keeping the statue up you've got the whole institution standing together with the pedophile. It's just incomprehensible.

Again this is the last time I'm saying this. If something severe isn't done, the US Supreme Court will get involved and heads are going to roll.

It's insane. Column out from the AP that calls, essentially, for the neutering of the program for the same amount of time that the pedophile was allowed to roam free in the showers of Penn State.

Not a bad idea. The football program as it's previously been conceived needs to be nonexistent for a significant amount of time. Anything less will show even more ignorance on the part of all involved.

The school enrolls 100,000 students and 44,000 faculty members. Like any other public university, I'm sure they invest tens of millions of dollars in research and consultation to businesses and farms in Pennsylvania. You are talking about massive yearly losses that affect all of those people, not to mention the taxpayers that have to foot the bill. Not to mention indirect economic impact.

It's not hyperbole. It's why anybody who's ever looked at the economics of a death penalty have said it's a stupid idea.

Plus hundreds of millions of dollars in settlement losses and massive punishments to all those involved. More than likely, there will be massive mandated compliance changes that are going to add even more cost.

Why do we continue to ignore those things?

Football doesn't fund that institution. Not even close.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/colle...se-money_n.htm

You think that $18M is going to cover the legal costs involved?

This mess shows that SOME of the people at Penn State put the football program ahead of decency, and those people should be drawn out and stoned to death for all I care.

I'd have to agree that I think it would hurt... but I don't think it would cripple the university in the off chance they would get the death penalty. It would certainly cripple the football program though.
