WR Emmanuel Sanders signs with Denver - Executives cry foul

Executives crying foul over Emmanuel Sanders deal

Emmanuel Sanders is expected to sign with the Broncos tomorrow, but the process that led him there left the other teams involved fuming and crying foul. One team official claimed Sanders' agent broke "every rule in negotiations."

Agent Steve Weinberg, on behalf of the receiver, accepted a deal with the Chiefs in principle, according to one team source. Weinberg then engaged in negotiations with the Tampa Bay Bucs, according to another source involved in the process.

While shopping the Chiefs offer to the Bucs, Weinberg never explained that he had already accepted the terms of Kansas City's offer. Later in the night, Sanders' agent had agreed to terms with the Broncos, which is where he is currently headed. Sanders and Weinberg also rankled the 49ers by agreeing to visit, then blowing it off.

"This was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiations," one executive involved said. "Totally wrong. This needs to be stopped."

Reached at his home late Saturday, Weinberg declined to comment on the record when informed of the allegations.

The Dallas-based agent was recently reinstated by the NFL Players Association, which had barred and decertified him in 2003 because it had reportedly found he diverted assets to an offshore account during a dispute with a partner and collecting a fee from a client prematurely. Weinberg later filed suit against the NFLPA and its top officials, alleging they illegally took away his certification for eight years, along with past, present and future income of clients.

Weinberg has two clients currently on NFL teams, not including Sanders. He had 42 before he was barred.

While Weinberg broke no laws in accepting a deal, the entire situation infuriated those he dealt with. It is commonly accepted in the league that once two sides agree to a deal -- in writing or in handshake form -- that's the end of the story. Instead, by Weinberg shopping the Chiefs deal and then not informing the Bucs that a deal had been reached showed another side of the business. It is unclear if the Broncos were aware of the previous actions.

"When a man gives you his words and pulls out," one executive said, "then gives another team your word and pulls out, then gives another team his word ... Not proper."

The only thing I can think of is that Lamar sold his soul for a playoff win over heavily favored Houston in '93. We've been paying exorbitant prices with this team ever since. Damndest thing ever.

The "best" part is that Denver never even met with the guy and they agreed on a deal. ...That's like flying this girl to town and putting her up in a hotel and she leaves with some dude that you ****ing hate. Kinda funny when you think about it.

Yeah, but it's not standard to fax over an offer sheet from one team, after you've agreed on the numbers, and shop it to another team.

I get your a broncos fan, and happy you got the guy, but to think this is no big deal is something else. This is bad business, and not standard in the NFL and I'm sure other sports as well.

If Peyton wasn't our QB, then that would concern me more. If true, maybe he got a really good reference from a trusted source. Or maybe it was just to make other teams weaker.

I wouldn't do that either, but it's his career and he hadn't actually signed yet. Point being that I would think many would be used to it on the admin side of the teams. Sanders probably just line stepped. It'll get him in the end if he does it enough.

As far as the Broncos, I root for the laundry. I don't care who's on the team as long as they win and give it there all on the field.

No one actually signs til days up to a week later, like Revis just signed his deal with the Pats today, yet it was agreed upon a week ago. That's the problem. It's all gentlemans agreements, til the actual contract is signed, days later. If it was standard To do what Sanders and his agent did, well, that would be a load of bad business and I don't even know how the sport would function when it came to FAs.

Weinberg says the Chiefs and Bus are butt-hurt

""If we reached or agreed to terms with the Chiefs, we would have signed with Kansas City and never turned back," Weinberg said. "There were absolutely no handshakes, verbal agreements or signed documents when Sanders left the Chiefs facility. Emmanuel was on his way to the airport when teams called us. We didn’t ‘shop any deals’ or ‘reach out’ to a single team. My fiduciary responsibility is to the players I represent and not to the NFL teams or their 'good ole boys' tactics.
"I am sorry if I upset any of the teams, but I know they realize my contractual and fiduciary duties are always going to benefit my client, Emmanuel Sanders. As everyone in the NFL knows, a deal is not a deal until it’s signed and approved by the league office. I'm so happy for and proud of Emmanuel. He was patient throughout the whole free-agent process and received a fair deal from one of the best teams in the entire league, a championship contender, with Hall of Fame quarterbacks running everything both on and off the field. This was his hope from the very beginning of our relationship.”

Did you read the whole thing? The Chiefs were jerking him around.

Told him to come back and they would increase the offer and then reduced the offer, and tehn pulled the offer. Old JD did this to himself and it sounds over ego. Either way the Chiefs pulled the offer before he agreed to anything with Denver.

so that should clear this up, thought you guys should know.

"While Sanders was en route to the airport, Weinberg received a call from a Chiefs executive. Weinberg was told that if Sanders would turn the car around and return to the building, the Chiefs were prepared to improve their offer.
"At the same time, the Bucs front office was also calling Weinberg with a new offer. With two new offers in hand, and still no offer from the 49ers, Sanders told Weinberg that for now, he had decided not to visit California. Instead, he instructed the driver to turn the car around.

"However, when Weinberg got Sanders on the phone with Chiefs executive, the X amount of money – the reason the car turned around – was no longer there. The new amount the Chiefs spoke of was $4 million less than it had been just moments ago."
