Pats Cheating Comfirmed

According to the report, the league sources say the NFL determined 11 of the 12 footballs used by the Patriots were under-inflated by two pounds per square inch each. Per NFL rules, footballs are required to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 PSI and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces.

That explains absolutely everything, nobody DID anything wrong, and yet the Patriots have had to go through a week of this crap for nothing.

I don't know that that is what happened, but neither does anyone else at this point because the NFL isn't saying much. But to leap to "cheaters!" based on all this is ridiculous.

For the pressure inside a football to drop 2 psi, the balls would have to get close to the freezing point, which didn’t happen Sunday, though it’s possible it has happened in some of those legendary cold-weather games — like the 1967 ice-bowl, when the temperature hit 15 below.

Boston Globe: So did the weather do it?

Probably not. Temperature may have played a role, but the field wasn’t cold enough to explain the full 2 psi drop. More likely, the weather had an accomplice.

Yeah, except the 2 PSI drop isn't verified anywhere. And now the question is, if they don't LOG the PSI, then how can they verify that either?

And you can find a zillion links on both sides of how much pressure is lost. The other factor in addition to cold, is water. it was raining during the game, and that apparently influences things also.

Finally, the world of physics is divided between the theoretical physicists and the experimentalists. The physicists cited in the news worked with formulas. HeadSmart Labs, a private firm in Pittsburgh, tested actual footballs. It found that footballs inflated at 75 degrees, then cooled to 50 degrees lost 1.1 pounds of pressure.

The lab took one more step. Since it was raining on game day, the staff dampened the balls. This led to a drop of an additional 0.7 pounds of pressure for a total of at least 1.8 pounds per square inch.

And the final factor is the Patriots' "treatment" of the balls prior to the game. Belichick referenced it, but wouldn't specify what the treatment was. One person mentioned the possibility of a belt sander (seriously?!). What does seem to be agreed upon, however, is that such treatment could inflate the PSI.

Logical reasoning? The weather.

Logical reasoning -- different starting point PSIs, plus Patriots conditioning of the balls prior to the game, plus possible different temperatures when inflated.

Also note the 2.0 PSI number is NOT verified. And may NEVER be verified because apaprently the NFL doesn't log the PSI numbers.

Our ruling

Belichick said that moving the footballs from indoors to outdoors could explain the loss of about 1.5 pounds per square inch of pressure. Experimental and mathematical results are in that ballpark. Lab tests said air temperature alone could bring down the pressure by 1.1 pounds. The ideal gas law predicted a 1 pound loss. The rain that day would explain at least another 0.2 pound shift and possibly as much as 0.7.

We lack firm numbers on the actual pressure drop in the Patriots footballs, as well as precise information on the starting and ending temperatures. Within the limits of what the physics alone can tell us at this point, the math gets us pretty close to what Belichick said.

With allowances for the uncertain data, we rate the claim Mostly True.

Yeah...except this whole thing happened because John Harbaugh blew the "cheating" whistle after the divisional round and that's why they even tested the balls.

It's obviously not the first time this has happened.

Also, Tom Brady did an interview in 2011 that Colin cowherd has been referencing that he says he likes the football better with a little less air in it.

You are looking for something to make you feel better about the patriots cheating ways when you know as well as the rest of us that they deliberately cheated.

Again

Well, Asterix ... I really appreciate the continued cheating by Brady and the Patriots that allows me to use whatever narrative I please.

Peyton Manning has ZERO cheating scandals for me to steer any narrative.

Hard for me to think a cheater is better than Peyton Manning? I mean, a better cheater? Yeah. Sure. Definitely?

A better QB?

Hm. Don't think so. I'd hate to see how many Super Bowls Manning would have won had he known the defensive signals pre-snap. My God, he may have never lost?

That article links a test run by HeadSmart who concludes the balls should have dropped 1.8 psi. That would mean the Colts balls (if we assume max inflation) should have also been below acceptable levels. They weren't.
