That's tinnitus. The presence of noise without an external source. Something like 1-12 adults has it, most being over 60 years old.

Is your hearing normal? Have you had it tested?

I've had it tested and for the most part my hearing is normal other than a few frequencies. I never asked about the whine because it's always been there. It's kind of loud if I sit and listen to it (kind of like ringing ears after a rock concert), but again it's really easy to tune out, especially if there's any other noise present.

The weird thing is that I actively avoid noise. I've heard that it can happen if you're around loud noise a lot, but I've never had a lot of exposure to loud noise.

Be careful with earbuds while jogging. The SPL of those things can be devastating and definitely can cause hearing damage.

There isn't great treatment and most people do what you do, tune it out.

Definitely. My generation especially. So many idiots blasting their earbuds. We tested our class in graduate school and a good 10/40 people were already showing signs of high frequency hearing loss which is common with listening to music too loud. If other people can hear your music, it's too loud.

I can't stand the sound of earbuds. Even though I look like a dinosaur, if I'm listen to music on a portable device, I use mini-headphones.

My ears are my life.

As our mine!

I like headphones as well but too bulky at the gym, so I use earbuds there. I keep the volume very low.

Glad you are looking out for your ears. Too many people take their hearing for granted until it's too late.

I compose and produce music for a living. While I could always compose with poor hearing, I wouldn't be able to mix, especially a 100 piece orchestra with heavy guitars and sound design synths and other crazy sounds.

I take every precaution and I'm glad you're doing it as well.

I kind of worry about that, because I spend about 3 or 4 hours a week running with those things. I try to keep it turned down to a reasonable level, but even at a reasonable level it feels like that's noise right on my eardrums.

Be very, very careful.

My occupation is much different than yours but I enjoy the silence.

Some of my best ideas come when I'm jogging or biking, which for me, is extremely relaxing despite the physical aspect.
