Let’s talk about the Miami Dolphins

Headed down to a familiar location for the Florida heat and a highly formidable opponent.

The Dolphins have a great defense, a mediocre at best offense. Not all that different from Denver really, but coached better.

A win would clinch the AFCW for the 5th straight season, so there is some added importance. Of course we are on Pittsburgh’s heels, too.

I think we all aren’t totally sure what to make of the team at this point. They’ve been inconsistent in their focus, their execution. There seem to be problem areas that could be upgraded by simply plugging a backup in (hi, Wis), but it remains to be seen if any changes are going to be made.

It’s a weird league where outcomes are all over the place, winning is really damn hard, but they’re still 11-1 and largely look to be on cruise control half the time. I do think there’s something to be said for the GS Warriors comparison where sometimes they just don’t flip the switch until they have to. I guess we will see what happens as the games get bigger and bigger for this team.

This one won’t be easy, but if the offense comes out locked in from the go, it shouldn’t be a scare. I also think it’s another opportunity for the defense to perform well again, but I still feel like we need more from our pass rush along the DL moving forward.

Game is at noon on CBS...

the more I think of this game, and the fact that Miami's weakness on D is run defense, I'm not so certain we won't see a similar game plan like the Buffalo game.

We haven't been very good on the ground most of the year, and quite honestly, we haven't had to be that good, but in that game, we were excellent in the run game, and while I don't think we'll shy away from taking our shots in the passing game, I wouldn't be shocked in the least to see that type of game plan.

At the end of the day, Andy has a great pulse for attacking the weakness of the D. It's simply a theory, and I could be totally wrong, but wouldn't be shocked in the least....

I think it's too early to make that call. Tua is used to throwing his receivers open. The issue with that is he can't because:
1. Our receivers don't get separation.
2. The OC doesn't open up the playbook...which may be a result of #1. Rarely are there calls to threaten a defense deep or even intermediately.

We only have viable receiver in DeVante Parker, and he's bottom 5 in average separation. Gesicki is near the bottom as well. Even when our #2 Preston Williams was healthy, he ranked near the bottom too. Tua didn't walk into a situation like Burrow: Green, Boyd, and Higgins at WR with Mixon at RB. Nor did he walk into Herbert's situation: Allen and Williams at WR and Ekeler at RB.

The offense seems like it functions better with Fitzpatrick because he's a gunslinger who doesn't mind throwing the ball up for grabs, opposite of the rookie. It's also why there's a constant fear that he'll turn the ball over as his play is up and down, you don't have to worry about that with Tua.

I don't expect Rowe to keep that up against Kelce, but I do hope to keep him down to around 4-6 catches and under 70 yards hopefully. Or hopefully the team will alternate doubling up Kelce and Hill. I don't like the idea of running man against either too often.
If the defense holds Kelce to 4-6 catches for 70 yards, that means Tyreek Hill and a random receiver or running back had big games. It's very rare for teams to stifle both Kelce and Hill in the same game.

I don't know if Tua or Herbert will prove to be the better QB (I suspect that Herbert will be better) but I do know that I am glad Patrick Mahomes is right handed. I hate watching left handed quarterbacks. My brain just thinks it looks wrong.

70% completions for 10.5 YPA, 341 yards, 2.7 TDs and 0.3 INTs

Those teams each put up 31 points. KC has a deeper/better group of playmakers and a better QB than each of those teams.

I expect KC to put up something like 38 points and 500 yards. Big day for Mahomes, especially early if the Dolphins try to leave Howard and Jones on islands against Hill and Watkins.

Having Watkins back is so big. If teams are employing the New England approach and doubling both Kelce and Hill, Watkins against single coverage (and, at best, CB #2) is the matchup KC can use to kill them.
Honestly I don't. While they could, I don't believe they will. They seem to only do that in "statement games". I don't think Miami is a statement game. I see those types of numbers happening against NO more than I do Miami. I could be wrong, but they seem to play on a whole different level against teams viewed as the elites of the NFL.

I expect the game to look a lot like the Denver game. Something like 27-17 and people will once again be worried about it.

Sorry man but this sounds like a whole lot of excuses.

You can say what you want about the Bengals WR's getting separation but Burrow literally had no time to throw behind that line, so they didn't even have time to get separation regardless of whether or not they were able.

Dolphins are your yearly “best bad teams, beat some average ones, lose to good ones” 9/10 win team.

Think 2010 chiefs.

eh - how many TDs were "stolen" against us last week?

Last week was way more close than it should have been - and that wasnt all on the chiefs......

I agree with this.....

I don't understand that Tua "throws receivers open", but "can't because they can't separate...."

the whole concept of throwing someone open implies no separation, hence the reason you have to put the ball in the precise spot to get the completion...i.e. throw them open....

Miami's OL isn't the best either, we're literally starting 3 rookie offensive linemen and can't run the ball. Well separation is part of the issue, the other is actual talent. Our best receivers after Parker are a #4 at best 5'7 slot/gadget receiver, two converted college QB's, and a special teamer. Also doesn't help that our OC is almost 70 and was dragged out of retirement.

You may call it an excuse but I'd implore you to find a successful QB with a similar cast of weapons. Do you think Mahomes would have the same level of success if you guys didn't have Hill, Kelce, and Watkins and instead had our receivers?

Im sorry, have you SEEN Patrick Mahomes throw the football? Scramble? Run?

Dude has highlight reel plays to scrubs like D-ROP, Incompletrius Harris, and Chris Conley. Then the same jaw dropper he had to Conley, he basicly replicated the next season to the LEGENDARY Byron Pringle. He put a 40 sone odd yard td on our FULLBACK for Christs sake.

If a guy can CATCH, then its over. Mahomes will put the ball on him. Doesnt matter who is playing.

ONE GAME with Mahomes got Albert "gator arms" Wilson his contract with the Dolphins.

Comparing Mahomes to anyone simply isnt fair to the other qb, because its rigged from the start.

Ryan Fitzpatrick posted an almost 80 QBR with that exact set of weapons. Just saying.

As I explained earlier, Fitzpatrick is a gunslinger who will throw it up anywhere while Tua is not. Preston Williams was also available when Fitzpatrick posted that QBR.
