I did a few static line jumps my freshman year at K-State. It's a pretty good rush, but kinda weak because you only free fall for like 5 seconds, if that. Honestly, the scariest part is when the door swings open, you look down 3500 feet to the ground, the plane's going 90 mph, and you have to climb out on the strut of the plane and hang. When you're a novice, they don't let you just jump out.

I still want to do a tandem jump so I can go from 10,000 feet without working my way up on solo jumps. I hated having to spend my whole Saturday or Sunday out at the jump site waiting for my turn.

You know what they say: if your parachute doesn't open, you get a free burial within 5 minutes.

Off topic, but I saw a trash truck the other day that said, "Satisfaction Guaranteed or you get your trash back".

I wish I had the money to get certified. After you have your own equipment and certification its only $20 a jump. Imagine jumping over places like Hawaii. Would be so amazing.

I did a "static line" jump several years ago (before kids) and loved it. It wasn't a true static line where a cord pulls right when you jump out. I held onto a little chute that pulled the main one out, so I had a few seconds of free fall before my chute deployed.

I had to step out of the plane, hold onto the pole that supported the wing and let my feet fly out behind me. I had to hold onto the wing support for a couple of seconds before getting the thumbs-up to let go. My biggest problem was stepping out to let my feet fly behind me, I guess I was concerned that I'd lose my grip before being given the OK. Once I was hanging there, letting go was no problem.

I flared a bit too early on my landing and came down on my knees. No injuries.

It was fun and I'd do it again, but kids and lack of money are preventing that.

I'm guessing that the three buddies are there to lend-a-chute if he isn't on target. That is just crazy.
