I hope we are able to work out a short-term deal to keep him due to the difficulty in replacing him.

Not every safety has his coverage+ ability.

If we aren't able to get it done maybe we should look at drafting a corner that can move to safety.

There's a few safeties in this draft that could do what he does (play everywhere). Depending on where you want to get them, Hill and Brisker are late 1st rounders and Pitre a little after that.

The FA safety class is loaded. They can get a good safety to pair with Thornhill for much cheaper, and use that money to re-sign Ward and some pass rushers.

Then they can draft another safety. Our replacement for Mathieu might not be as good, but I’ll take an upgrade over Dirty Dan (rookie) to go with a cheaper (but good) safety all day.

The draft looks pretty good for safeties as well.

The Chiefs have options. They aren't desperate.

I know the draft is good for defensive backs. Who do you see as possible FA fits?

The guys I have in mind are competent, cheap but are an obvious step down.

Jordan Whitehead or Justin Reid are the main guys that come to mind, but the list of free agent safeties is long.

It might be an”obvious step down”, but it’s also younger and cheaper.

Bullshit. He is going to be easier to replace than most want to admit. Most players in craft years ball out to earn that new contract. HB was making “business decisions” in his contract year; what is his performance going to be like after he gets paid and has nothing to lose?

This is a very easy replacement to make.

Sure, finding a top NFL safety is so easy.

Hell, we struggled to get guys on the field that belonged in the NFL after HB went out in the Buffalo game.

Thornhill is not starting caliber, at least here. Maybe he would be in another scheme. Watts is garbage.

That is what we had on hand while having/relying on HB. Going into the draft and FA knowing he isn’t going to be there is an entirely different ball game.

And again, if he is making business decisions during a contract year, how good do you expect him to be after he gets paid, especially given his age?

This is a no brainier as far as I’m concerned.

Has anything ever come out on what the deal is with him? He went from playing Pro bowl level to part time snaps looking only respectable.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

He was in 2019, before the injury. No reason to think he's done.

Correct, not every injury is the same. And bringing him back early could have been a mental set back.
