Tyrann Mathieu reiterates he wants to stay in Kansas City at NFL Honors

Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu — a nominee for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award — joined NFL Network on the red carpet ahead of the NFL Honors in Los Angeles. Mathieu is due to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason after three seasons in Kansas City.

“Obviously, the hope and the dream is to continue to be a Kansas City Chief,” said Mathieu. “We created so much history the last couple of years... I want to be in Kansas City, and I think everybody knows that.”

There is a twitter video but I am unable to post it here for some reason Follow link below.

There's a few safeties in this draft that could do what he does (play everywhere). Depending on where you want to get them, Hill and Brisker are late 1st rounders and Pitre a little after that.

They have no intention of tagging HB and giving him a contract equal to the top 5 free safeties in football.

The FA safety class is loaded. They can get a good safety to pair with Thornhill for much cheaper, and use that money to re-sign Ward and some pass rushers.

Then they can draft another safety. Our replacement for Mathieu might not be as good, but I’ll take an upgrade over Dirty Dan (rookie) to go with a cheaper (but good) safety all day.

The draft looks pretty good for safeties as well.

The Chiefs have options. They aren't desperate.

I know the draft is good for defensive backs. Who do you see as possible FA fits?

The guys I have in mind are competent, cheap but are an obvious step down.

Jordan Whitehead or Justin Reid are the main guys that come to mind, but the list of free agent safeties is long.

It might be an”obvious step down”, but it’s also younger and cheaper.

Agree! He can be replaced physically .... there must be some "heady" safties out there willing to hit! Lock up Ward and use that money elsewhere...

Draft class and FA have loads of safeties and WRs. More I been looking at it, just doesn't really benefit us to waste cap on Mathieu. I'd pass on him and use that cap on an edge because lord knows we will need it. Edge class has very little depth IMO.

Bullshit. He is going to be easier to replace than most want to admit. Most players in craft years ball out to earn that new contract. HB was making “business decisions” in his contract year; what is his performance going to be like after he gets paid and has nothing to lose?

This is a very easy replacement to make.

If Tyrann doesn’t get the type of deal he thinks he will in FA, I’d welcome him back on a 2 year deal for a deal averaging the 10th highest paid safety…but that’s about it.
