Too much pie in the sky mentality going on here. Veach is a wizard but not this much.

How are you moving up from the bottom in the 1st round and take a good DL and then have multiple picks in the 2nd round? We are still going to be at the bottom of the 2nd.

You think Brown isn't going to recognize its really a 3 year deal? He's not taking a 3 year deal.

DL FA are going to cost a fortune. Next 2-3 years we have a lot of quality players contracts coming due. We dont have big time money for a DL FA and then lose someone like Sneed, Creed, Smith, Bolton etc. because we are up against the cap.

Can't keep everyone. You probably are able to keep 2 of those 4 guys, so C and Bolton woudl be ideal IMO>

The price for a Brian Burns is what deters me. It’s gonna be a Frank Clark trade price.

We’ve got one of the biggest QB contracts in the sport. Trading multiple first rd picks or a (1st and 2nd) and paying this guy over $28 million a year is how you slam your window shut for the future

It's not ideal, I agree.

But you also have to factor in how good this regime has been at drafting players in the mid and later rounds.

The thing they've struggled finding (obviously) is guys like Burns, which makes sense because they don't typically get drafted where we pick.

Look at it this way, would you trade Karlaftis and CEH for Burns?

With the benefit of hindsight, sure.

Of course, he went 16th overall and we could have traded up to grab him. See how hindsight works?

Thankfully we learned, thru hindsight, not to draft a RB in the first round.

Some of us don't need the benefit of hindsight. We knew it was a bad idea years ago, long before it actually happened.

They're not perfect, they do make mistakes occasionally.

When you consider the contract, it's not Karlaftis and CEH for Burns.

It's Karlaftis, Burns and Sneed (and probably more than that).

It's the contract, not the player.

Probably.

But as we talked about with Bolton and Gay somewhat, positionally, what's gonna be harder to find? I don't think it's out of turn to think Burns could be a "lead the league in sacks" kinda guy out there. Now, that's not necessarily something you have to have to win in the league.

But I would think I'd rather pay for that vs a slot CB or a ILB.

The problem is you could get a slot CB, an ILB, AND probably another player for the cost of one Brian Burns.

Sneed's not really a slot CB. He plays wide in base and moves inside in the Nickel.

He's a CB1. He's versatile in coverage, great in run support and is a fiend on the blitz.

Jones has been our best defensive player this year but the 2 spot comes down to Sneed or Bolton and I think an argument can be made for either one.

Now on the flipside - CBs are EXPENSIVE in their own right. When Sneed's due a new deal, he's gonna cost more than someone like Ward did. Probably nearer the $15-17 million mark. And like you said, we've had a lot of success finding CBs, so are we better served throwing Sneeds cap money at Burns (given that he'll probably cost 80% of what Burns does) and using the draft to replace Sneed? Well now you're pivoting back to 'yeah, but we've just given up a massive chunk of draft capital to acquire Burns...'

So again - it's the contract AND the picks that create the issue. The same issue I screamed bloody murder about with Clark.

I'm not exactly saying there's a clear right answer - just that you have to approach this sort of thing with both eyes open. Your approach is potentially higher reward, but it's undeniably higher risk. Man, we just absolutely cannot have another Frank Clark situation here. That would've rat-****ed us if we didn't have so many positive cap situations at the time - cap situations that are largely gone now.

Star trades in the middle of the season are rare, so it’s barely even worth talking about. But I would absolutely trade for Burns. We are in the middle of the pack cap wise next year, before any cuts/restructures. The cap is projected to rise 20 mil a year. We could absolutely make it work.

If you landed Burns your D is absolutely set for the next 3-4 years. We are extremelyyy young on that side with the only aging asset being Jones at 28. If you could craft the perfect compliment to karlaftis in a lab it’s Burns. Have I mentioned he’s 24?

Like I said, he’s only 24 on a rebuilding team, so it wouldn’t be wise to trade him. But if he is indeed getting moved I’m all for Veach being aggressive
