They really should have tried to get Thornhill or Saunders deal done this past offseason. Could have really built in some value there.

You arent wrong. But man its hard to find athletes like Willie. IF he puts it all together this year down the stretch it will be a tough call for Veach.

Too much pie in the sky mentality going on here. Veach is a wizard but not this much.

How are you moving up from the bottom in the 1st round and take a good DL and then have multiple picks in the 2nd round? We are still going to be at the bottom of the 2nd.

You think Brown isn't going to recognize its really a 3 year deal? He's not taking a 3 year deal.

DL FA are going to cost a fortune. Next 2-3 years we have a lot of quality players contracts coming due. We dont have big time money for a DL FA and then lose someone like Sneed, Creed, Smith, Bolton etc. because we are up against the cap.

It's really a difference of opinion on it, which is understandable and I actually see both sides.

Brian Burns for example here. He's probably what, a top 10 edge player in the league and he's 24. Those type of guys are just damn hard to find outside the top 20ish of the draft. You do have your occasional Max Crosby's for sure, it's just rare.

The Chiefs have went to a more "depth and talent everywhere" vs "stars and scrubs" on D moreso because they've just injected alot of draft resources over there which is commendable and looks to be going well.

But in today's NFL with the cap being what it is, you aren't gonna be able to keep those guys together longterm. It's just not feasible and if you try you end up having a bit of a decaying offensive core. Defense from year to year in the NFL is unpredictable anyway so you're always gonna have to keep adding talent there.

Depth and such on D is imperative to get thru the regular season. I do think when you get in the playoffs and it comes nutt cutting time you need dudes to make plays (which we do have a few of) and that's where a guy like Burns comes in.

When it's 3rd and 7 against Buffalo late in the game in January, you need a guy that can just win a matchup and sack the QB.

Trading resources for someone this year will make it more difficult to keep some guys, but I would argue, I'd rather have a premier edge player to build around than a LG or a premium 2nd ILB etc.

Bolton or Gay isn't really a hard choice for me. One is the leader and centerpiece of the defense.

The other is a supreme athlete who for one reason or another cant seem to stay on the field.

Can't keep everyone. You probably are able to keep 2 of those 4 guys, so C and Bolton woudl be ideal IMO>

The price for a Brian Burns is what deters me. It’s gonna be a Frank Clark trade price.

We’ve got one of the biggest QB contracts in the sport. Trading multiple first rd picks or a (1st and 2nd) and paying this guy over $28 million a year is how you slam your window shut for the future

Better trade away the entire draft! We're going to lose everybody!

It's not ideal, I agree.

But you also have to factor in how good this regime has been at drafting players in the mid and later rounds.

The thing they've struggled finding (obviously) is guys like Burns, which makes sense because they don't typically get drafted where we pick.

Look at it this way, would you trade Karlaftis and CEH for Burns?

With the benefit of hindsight, sure.

Of course, he went 16th overall and we could have traded up to grab him. See how hindsight works?

Thankfully we learned, thru hindsight, not to draft a RB in the first round.

I wouldn't be shocked if only Sneed is kept out of that group, unless they can be had for at or near vet minimum. Gay can't stay on the field for a variety of reasons, we may have already replaced Thornhill with Cook, and Saunders is a rotational piece at best on the DL.

Some of us don't need the benefit of hindsight. We knew it was a bad idea years ago, long before it actually happened.

They're not perfect, they do make mistakes occasionally.

I've long since been a member of the "running backs drafted early is a bad idea" club. Dues are usually due at the end of the month.
