Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

The Texans are rebuilding they have two first rounders already, maybe they go QB and LT in the draft? Use the massive amount of cap space to build the team out.

I believe that is likely the first choice for Veach IF it is even an option.

If it is NOT, they will draft one AND sign a vet. No way they only draft or only sign a vet.

Also, they wont trade up into the teens. I personally believe we can stay at 31 and get a LT but if a guy they really want drops to the high 20s, Veach usually has a read on which teams he needs to get ahead of. He will know at that point if we need to move up.

So it will look like Tunsil (longshot) or Rookie LT and Lewan/Dillard/Wynn/Smith...
The idea of Tunsil is amazing, but the man is set to make $35M this season and then is due for a contract thereafter, placing us in the exact same situation.

I'm not a cap guy, so maybe someone else can explain how Tunsil would even be financially feasible. Because on the surface, it doesn't look possible.

You would have to trade for him and immediately get him a new contract to lower that cap hit in his first year. We'd only be on the hook for $18.5 million but it would still have to be done.

I haven't been all the way through the mega thread the last few days so apologies in advance if Q....

Boom: Playing on the franchise tag in 2022, Brown helped the Chiefs return to Super Bowl glory. Now the top offensive tackle available in free agency will merit top dollar, and if placed in an offense similar to Kansas City's -- one that leans on the run and uses play-action off it -- the money spent on Brown will be well worth it.

Bust: Brown got beat plenty as a pass protector in Kansas City. That's not to say this hulking bookend simply cannot get the job done, but his new passer must be able to move in the pocket. (No sitting ducks, please!) Brown's inconsistencies could be further magnified if he lands in an offense that is primarily a dropback-pass operation.

I wouldn’t invest heavily with what appears to be a lot of depth at LT in the draft. You have a lot of the top guys that look really solid. You’ve got guys you might be able to trade up for in the late teens or 20s like Broderick Jones with Paris Johnson and skoronski likely gone. But there are also some intriguing athletic options later.

Guys like Darnell Wright and dawand Jones are both huge but dawand is a mountain, like 6’7” 375 with something like 36” arms. I see both as potential pro bowl RTs.

Anton Harrison from OK is athletic with 34” arms. Blake Freeland ran and jumped out of the gym at the combine with some of the best numbers ever at the combine and he’s 6’8”. He’s a freak with a 37” vert and 10’ broad. 4.98 40, and respectable numbers in all the other drills and he’s from byu. Braeden Daniels from Utah is another guy that’s big and athletic with decently 33” arms with experience at LT. Wanya Morris is another guy from from Oklahoma that’s athletic with 35” arms. Lots of developmental guys here that are intriguing. One of the deeper athletic, long arms drafts I’ve seen in a while for LTs.

As of right now my thoughts are to package some picks, move up, draft a LT. Trade for Hopkins. Let the remaining tackles on the roster duke it out for RT. Bring in another aging vet at DE like we've been doing. Start Cook at safety. Lets roll.

I'm perfectly comfortable letting Veach pick a LT for Reid, who's strength is OL, to develop. Especially with the best QB in the NFL at avoiding sacks.

How many picks do you want to trade?

If we trade up at all, it'll be 5-7 spots AT MOST. Outside of that, I don't think we move at all. I also don't think we trade anything meaningful for Hopkins.

I'm 100% confident we don't trade for Tunsil.

How many picks do we actually have? I keep hearing 9-10, then some other guy will say 12? Which is it?

We have 9 without compensatory, IIRC.

That's why I think if a deal happens for Tunsil, it will have to include a player that we were planning on paying, like Gay or Sneed.

This allows Tunsil to take up that exiting players cap space, and also allows us to retain some draft comp with which to backfill the player we traded away.

I'd hate to see a player we like get shipped off, but that's the business part of this whole thing.

Not necessarily. They don’t have to trade for him now. They could always extend Jones, gain more cap space and then trade for Tunsil. You’re only covering $18.5 million anyways.
