Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

As we kick around the idea of "stop-gap" LT's, I think it's important to review Breer's info on the reason behind our decision not to tag OBJ - "...desire to lock in a long-term LT this offseason."

Long term LT isn't Taylor Lewan.

That's either draft or trade for.

Long term solution is drafting one obviously, but you can get there by signing a guy for 1-2 years and drafting a guy and then sliding that guy over.

It is a short and long term fix at the position if you sign Lewan and draft Jones, Jones can handle RT for a year or 2 then move over.

They didn't franchise tag him because it would tie up a ton of money that they wouldn't be able to use in FA right away. They also probably aren't coming to an agreement before FA begins either. That still doesn't mean that Veach looked at OBJ and his agent and told him to get the **** out of KC.

Keep posting it though like it's some kind of evidence.
Did you not hear that clip? James Palmer is a good source and he said there is a ZERO % chance they work on a deal now.

Veach has a number and Orlando is well beyond it. The Chiefs were pissed off at his outrageous demands last year (rumored to be full guarantees beyond signing and $25 million AAV) and they met with him again this week and he still wants that.

Yeah. I’m thinking Brett Veach told his agent to **** off

Exactly. It's not a contradiction at all.

In fact, it's probably the mostly likely way to get that long term solution while not sacrificing the short term.

There are no long term solutions in free agency, and there might not be any options through trade either. The only guaranteed way to find a long term solution given what we know right now is the draft.

Both played well in the Super Bowl, but the field conditions were almost certainly helpful. Good on them, nice job fellas, see you later.

You don't pay top of the market for that level of play, you just don't. Not if you want to stay on top, you don't.
Very good point. Mahomes is not Joe Burrow or Tom Brady - guys who just eat sacks. If you put Joe Burrow in this offense with this line you would have seen 2-3x more sacks. Mahomes is that good at avoiding them when he get pressured.

But I did think Brown did a much better job towards the end of the year. He's literally just asking 50% too much, which is a huge gap in what he deserves and what this team should pay.

This "play RT play LT" isn't as easy as you're making it out to be.

If you're gonna draft a guy to play LT, play him at LT.

They were willing to blow Williams out and kept hitting the bid button.

They'll pay a guy if they think he's worth it.

The reason they didn't tag Brown is because they want a long-term solution and they don't want to start negotiations again after his salary just went up 20%.

Nothing else is fact. Probable, sure. But not done, not yet.

Yea, I'm just not going to write off the possibility that they re-sign OBJ because of the lack of options alone.
