Gretz) Carl: It Was Never Close

Carl: It Was Never Close
October 14, 2008 - Bob Gretz |

Speaking from St. Petersburg, Florida where the NFL is holding its annual October meetings, Carl Peterson said Tuesday night that a deal for Tony Gonzalez was never close to happening.

“No, it was never close,” Peterson said. “For a player of Tony’s stature I was willing to accomodate something I don’t normally do. I went out to see if there were teams interested in him. I did that and there were very few teams that were interested.

“Tony and his representative (Tom Condon) knew from the start that any deal had to make sense for the Kansas City Chiefs and no one came close. No proposal compared to the value of Tony Gonzalez to the Kansas City Chiefs.”

Peterson incidated that it all came down to three teams that he would not identify. He would not comment on the proposals, but said none of them contained a first-day draft choice (rounds one through three) in compensation.

“I used as my measuring stick the fact that the New York Giants got a second and fifth round picks for Jeremy Shockey,” said Peterson. “Although he is five years younger, in my opinion he’s not as good and never will be as good as Tony Gonzalez. Had a team come to us with a second-round pick, then there would have been a reason to continue the conversation. That never happened.

“As far as I’m concerned, if you trade Tony Gonzalez for a second-day draft pick, you really have demeaned one helluva football player. I know where he’s at, I know he’s 32 years old. His value to the Kansas City Chiefs exceeds anything that was offered.

“I listened to proposals that were not even close.”

Does Peterson have any concerns about Gonzalez and his return to the team after this disappointment?

“I saw some comments made by Brian Waters and I have to agree with them; I think Tony will be a professional and he’ll handle this the way he’s done everything else, by coming in and working hard,” Peterson said. “I’m sure he’s not happy, but he understood the situation from the start.

“We were not going to just give Tony Gonzalez away. He understood that wasn’t going to happen.”

Glazer said that Buffalo offered a 3rd but Tony vetoed that.

The Chiefs still have to play the Buffalo Bills next month. I’m not sure Peterson would have an interest in trading in sending the best TE in the history of the NFL to an opposing team. The fans and media would have a field day with that story.

TG is one of my all time favorite to play the game. I wish the Giants had him. With the playoffs months away, this isn't the best time to made to make a deal.

When is the next trade, Nov? See what happens.

A great QB can lead a team to a championship behind a great line and a team needs a great defense, special teams, and good coaching. They'll get you there. But in the end a team's depth is what will win ... Just my opinion

I expected Carl to hold out for a second, which is why I figured it wouldn't get done. Not too much shock here.

While we're talking about the trade Deadlines, would it be wise to back the date to say, the first week of November? That way, at that time frame, it'll be obviously clear which teams should be buying and what teams should be selling.

Meh, it would make more sense to have it on say week 9 or 10, where there is at least six or seven games left to be played for.

Plus it would generate some newsworthy reports and such. And hypotheically speaking, let's say the Giants TE, Boss, somehow suffers a freak injury and the Giants are stuck w/o any decent TE's? And it's only week seven?

I have to research this -- The Giants don't trade for veterans. I remember reading that in the middle of the season the Giants ended up making a trade for Otis Anderson. Tony Gonzales --(but I'm tired), they made a trade for Otis Anderson. The Giants did it once with Anderson, who was an elite player. So I thought they would get it done with Gonzalez.

Found it.. In the winter of 1866, the Giants made a trade with Geronimo, for T.A. Tittle. In 1986, the Cardinals traded Anderson to the Giants in the middle of the season..

Why did the Cardinals get rid of him? I got to go to bed

Otis Anderson:
2 Time Pro Bowl selection (1979, 1980)
1979 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
1989 NFL Comeback Player of the Year
2 Time Super Bowl Champion (Super Bowl XXI, Super Bowl XXV)
Super Bowl XXV MVP
Arizona Cardinals all-time leader in rushing yards with 7,999

People in this market are so use to a team that doesn't win they are attached to players, simply put.

Gonzalez can made an immediate impact with any team. Besides having talent, he is a very smart player. Peterson might have a better shot with the teams that are making a run for the Super Bowl. Just my opinion...

And weren't the Saints stupid? Don't forget, Sean Payton was an offensive coordinator for the Giants during Shockey's rookie year. Payton was pushing the Saints GM to acquire Scockey back in January. I heard that Shockey failed the physical. I thought we were getting him back... Lord have mercy... he stinks. lol He has fans in NY... but you know how that goes...

Gilbride, the offensive coordinator for the Giants played Shockey more as a blocker. Shockey wanted to be a WR...

Hell, I'd take the money and run too
