Goodell and the changes in pre/reg season.

Just some junk from around the net:

Quote:
NFL commissioner: 4 exhibition games not needed

Associated Press

New York -- Commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL no longer needs four exhibition games in the preseason, but the league should change its offseason training programs.
NFL and union officials discussed adding two games to the regular season when they met Wednesday for their first negotiating session since February. Under the proposal, the schedule would switch from four exhibition and 16 regular-season games to two and 18.
Players have expressed concerns about an increase in injuries. Goodell said Thursday that even players don't like the four exhibition games -- and fans certainly don't now that most starters play sparingly during the preseason.
Um, if they have a ****ing clue in life they do, Sparky.

Are you serious? There are 32 teams because they can be placed in 8 divisions of 4.

An even number has no more merit in scheduling than odd. In fact if anything, odd number of games will get rid of the slightly annoying 8-8 records. A team will have either a winning season or a losing one.

You know if the extend the season two games they will still start the season after Labor Day. Super Bowl would be near the end of February. Just keep the season at 16 and lose 2 pre season games.

you answered your own question, it's set up that way because you play your division opponents twice which would be 8, and then their is the 8 other non-division games to counter balance the other 8. The NFL will probably add two non- conference games for that

I am all for it. The preseason is too long. Nobody wants to pay face value for a preseason ticket because it is going to be mainly the backups and rookies that play in those games. Not to mention they don't matter.

I may have a math fail, and am a n00b, but if there are 4 teams in a division, playing each divisional opponent twice = 6 games, (three opponents and yourself, and well, in the NFL you don't play yourself)

I remember those 6 preseason games also.

The question is, when did the starters ever play any extended time during the preseason, even as far back as those 6 game preseason schedules?

They have always played into the second half in a couple of weeks before the start of the regular season and that has always been the only extended playing time for starters.

The fans have always known they don't get extended playing time.

It's just that fans these days must have instant gratification, and the preseason isn't gratifying to the impatient society that we now live in.

Its totally farging stupid to have two sides so far apart at the bargaining table and then to bring something idiotic into the mix so that your side has more to give up. To get the extra games there will need to be compensation changes and extra roster spots given to the union.

The entire idea of the extra games is ludicrous. The reasoning behind it is players getting hurt in meaningless games. Which game are they most likely to be hurt in? Would it be a pair of games where they play a few series or games added onto the end of an already long season where they are expected to play every down?

Totally disagree. Why do they need extra spots when it is the same amount of total games and all the prices are the same pre or regular season at teh games. Just 2 more will count on the record books.
It seems to me that more injuries happen in training camp and preseason than in the regular season.

The fans will always want more. That doesn't mean they should get it.

It may seem there are more injuries, but its not true in even the least little bit. Some of the injuries have been overblown because of their impact in a game which means nothing. Pre-season games are still needed for teams to hone their skills, assess the younger talent and any number of other things.

A longer season will make the NFL record book irrelevant again while rolling up injuries. I'd rather see the starters on the sidelines of two pre-season games then having them on crutches on the sidelines watching the playoffs.

It does when they're forced to pay full price for the games. That's my biggest complaint by far.
