Does Anyone Mod Their Smartphone

I want to update my Vibrant from Froyo to Gingerbread but I understand there is still a problem with the GPS (which I use a lot). Has anyone here upgraded to Gingerbread? Positives... Negatives?

Could be a stupid question, but what do you use to backup your phone? I thought I could do it through HTC sync, but don't really see where to do it.
