ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia's first touchdown of the season turned out to be costlier than anyone could have expected.

Bulldogs coach Mark Richt announced Sunday evening that his team's top receiver, Malcolm Mitchell, will miss the remainder of the season after injuring the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while celebrating Todd Gurley's 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter of Saturday night's 38-35 loss to Clemson.

"Malcolm unfortunately has an ACL injury that needs to be repaired here," Richt said, adding that Mitchell should be eligible for a medical redshirt after suffering the injury so early in the season. "I'm not sure when we'll do the surgery, but sometime in the near future. So what we thought happened did happen. It was confirmed by the MRI today."

Mitchell ran toward Gurley in the end zone after the touchdown and seemed to land awkwardly when he leaped to celebrate the score. Gurley also injured himself on the play, straining his quad muscle while completing the long run and missing the next 11:14 of regulation while team doctors tended to the injury.

He's going to look great all year. It'd be hard not to when the schedule reads Ohio, Eastern Kentucky, Kentucky, Florida International, Temple, Rutgers, Central Florida, South Florida, UConn, Houston, Memphis and Cincinnati. Which is not to say he isn't very, very good, but put Alabama and AJ McCarron or UCLA and Brett Hundley or Clemson and Tajh Boyd or basically anybody else you want to name from a major conference against Ohio today and they'd look just as good. Because Ohio is clearly outmatched at every position on the field. And while I realize they lost to UConn last year and had close games with a couple of other teams, I think it's probably safe to say that the only time it won't be like that for him this season is in whatever BCS bowl Louisville ends up playing in. He's most likely going to have a season for the ages. It's like he's in 11 on 11 drills today.

Which is, again, not saying he's not good. He's got obvious tools and I think he's clearly the top QB prospect. Although I thought Boyd had a great showing last night. But how do you evaluate a guy playing a schedule like Louisville's? Even going back to last year, all you really have is the (great) Florida game...

(And of course level of competition didn't stop us from drafting Eric Fisher...)

He treated Florida like a HS game. I think he's the clear cut #1 pick next year.

I don't think so. He's a great player, but he's WAY over-hyped. He had one great game in the regular season and one great hit in a bowl game. Other than that, he was good, but he wasn't great.

I'm not so sure. He was far from impressive Thursday. Seemed slow and tired. Great body but the "taking plays off" problem seems to have become much more of an issue.

If he played for a team that had anybody else on defense that teams had to be worried about there would be no question about him being number 1.

If this QB from Florida State can speed up his throwing motion, he could be pretty good.

17 for 18 for 240 yards and 3 touchdowns is a pretty nice little first half for the kid.

And a rushing touchdown, too. Nice start.

But, yeah...that slow throwing motion needs some work to get that ball out faster.
