Are insults against friends/family members off limits?

Recently, this has come up in DC, but we've always set rules forum-wide rather than forum at a time. The entire place is so filled with personal attacks that I'm not sure any efforts could ever make conversation in there civil. But the question is, from a moderation standpoint, are personal attacks against family members over the line?

Depending on the answer to this question, we may add another bannable offense to the list. Poll to follow.

Oh dear lord no ...

Some people get worked up over words on a screen and nothing -- and I mean nothing -- will fix that. Those people will always find a way to be offended, clutch their pearls, and fall on their little virtual fainting couches.

There is simply too much chance of someone trying to get someone else banned not because they deserve it, but simply because they thought someone on the Internet was mean to them.

Yes, there are several people who post crap in the D.C. forum not to have an honest discussion of the issue(s), but simply to get a reaction -- and that includes insulting someone's family.

But the solution isn't to ban them. It's to ignore them. There's a reason we have that feature.

Listen, most folks who have been here for more than a month know who the crap disturbers are in D.C., and even in the Lounge. Put those folks on ignore and go about your lives.

Sheesh ... it's not that freakin' complicated.

How in the hell can any adult get that riled up about playground insults?

What a bunch of guff over nothing. Frazod is coming off as the typical grade school bully, all bluster and no balls. And I had always thought him a Chiefsplanet icon....

I think this really is only a realistic issue for those whose families are known in some way by the forum. For example, one of Marlboro Chief's favorite things to do is post a picture of royr17's wife and insult her looks.

Generic stuff about people who aren't really known isn't really the focus here.

I could live without the stipulations and I certainly don't want you making the decisions if we have them, but I don't see much distinction between a rude comment about a sick family member in a prayer thread and one that happens to be in a different thread.
