Covitz:Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said starter Alex Smith would likely play the entire first half on Sunday night at Carolina, but the rest of the quarterback rotation has not been determined.

The starting offense struggled in the preseason opener against Cincinnati, going three-and-out, settling for a short field goal and Smith lost a fumble when sacked. Smith said he had a simple goal for Sunday night: Hold onto the football.

“That was the biggest play for me in my (time on the field),” Smith said. “You look at two third-and-shorts that we didn’t convert, one on the run play and the last on the pass play ... miscommunication there with the receivers. You just can’t have it.

“To me, two plays jumped out — one, the fumble, you just can’t have turnovers. The second one, that third-and-2 down there, in the red zone, if you convert, you have a good chance of walking away with a touchdown. Those are big downs, we know that. You have to execute those and it’s all kind of in the details.”

Daniel will be on the team week 1. No ifs, ands, or buts.

The ChiefsPlanet meme that Daniel is going to be traded () and Smith is going to be released () are nonsense. From the GM down to the head coach they targeted these guys last year, and the position would have received one of the team's best letter grades last year.

They are not going to tear down that position and spend more resources on it - when we are in cap hell, mind you - when so many other positions are problematic.

The ideas that Bray will ever be this team's starter or that Daniel has trade value, or that Reid is not happy with Alex Smith are just patently absurd.

I love that Alex never throws a horrible pass-according to him it is always "miscommunication there with the receivers."

I guess Bowe was supposed to be five yards over and ten foot tall. Dammit Bowe!!

Some receivers you just can't get through to.

I'm not going to put myself up as an ardent Chase supporter, but the scenarios that have been thrown around here are incomplete.

True, IF Smith were to sustain a season ending injury (particularly early in the season) then it really isn't going to matter if Daniel starts or Bray or Murray.

But...

What if this team is in a position to make the playoffs and Alex gets hurt for the second half of a game or is out a week? Chase DID essentially get the team into winning position with the second team squad AT a desparate SD team last year. Until the coaching staff feels like Bray or Murray can do that, Daniel isn't going anywhere, IMO.

Whether guilty or not of a shit pass.. I'd sure like to know what happened on that one play. Anyone have any real knowledge of it.. anyone with no bias one way or the other? Sure looked like a pass that any QB should be able to make... so yes, it does lead me to believe that there was a miscommunication.. but who can say for sure.

I can see no good reason why Reid would risk Smith by playing him an entire half in the 2nd pre-season game. Let Bray and Murray go out there and sling it. Why not try to find out what you have?

Recipe for disaster, IMHO.

There's a lot of things that you can argue that Smith doesn't do well, but if he is missing a receiver by that much, then you can bet your ass that it almost assuredly was a miscommunication.

And make no mistake, Alex Smith isn't GrBac or Cassel.
He isn't one to point fingers elsewhere when he ****s up.
