your "big wins" is an emotional argument... facts say that san diego played better teams this year overall

How so? I can sit here and name top teams that Arizona beat. Who did SDSU or St. Mary's beat?

a valid point....they came up 2 pts short against St Mary's....and had some other close calls...but no "big wins".

I guess the argument is the RPI....and the "mediocre conference record" argument another poster made....

Do you reward a mediocre season (.500 or worse) in a major conference over a good season in a mid-major, or sub-major if you will, conference?

Tough call.

I just dont like the East Coast Sports Network's slurping of east coast teams....and Arizona (they have always had a man-crush for Lute Olson).

I usually defend the mid-majors, but I'm fair. I was the one pimping the Mo. Valley a few years ago when they were really good, the KU fans laughed me out of the building for saying Bradley could beat them. But to be fair, I don't think we have anything like that this year. Nobody is that good.

But I think Vitale has a good argument that the more we bring in these power teams it rewards teams that win 18-19 games and are really mediocre. That's not any fun to watch in the first round. It's more fun to watch a Davidson go up against Syracuse or somebody.

It's not just a mid-major thing, though. Looking at all of the 5 or 6 seeds and above, I see almost NOBODY capable of a sustained run. WVU is good for a few games, maybe, and I could definitely see a few mid-low seeds pulling upsets in the first round, but looking at a bracket, almost NOBODY outside of the top 4 seeds looks like a real threat.

Well, I think Vitale is certainly making more sense than anyone else in this argument.

Jay Bilas seems to become a bigger dick everyday. He used to be less of an a-hole. Still a pretty good analyst but I like Doug Gottlieb the most. He does his homework, and knows what he is talking about.

The only argument against Arizona is their big wins (KU, Gonzaga) came at home. You'd rarely ever get Kansas to go play at St. Mary's. Gonzaga had to go to St. Mary's since they're in the same conference... and they only won by 2 points... and Patty Mills was out.

Arizona played 2 non-conference games on the road, that's it. And they lost them both, including a 15 point loss at UNLV.

So, ranking 2009 meltdowns so far:

1. Vitale responds to the omission of Mid Majors
2. 'Hamas' hears about the Cassel trade
3. The Economy
