Nice take, Bill Simmons.

Kiper has been doing this for ESPN for over 20 years. Even if he didn't know what he was doing when he started, you can't convince me that 20 years on the job has taught him nothing.

Some people just have screwed up expectation of what these guys can do. Think about it. NFL teams get it wrong a lot. How much better do you expect Kiper to be?

This is how Kiper did it he got lucky in broadcast journalism by landing a job in the gestation of ESPN as a network in a whole. Currently he wouldn't be able to break the market as a the "ultimate evaluator of talent". He'd be just another internet draftnik

Mel Kiper Jr. has served as an expert analyst for ESPN's annual NFL draft coverage since 1984, providing in-depth information on the nation's most talented college football players. His pre-draft predictions are frequently the most accurate in the business, often as much as 80 percent correct on first-round selections. He also has a Web page (www.espn.go.com/melkiper), linked off of ESPN.com, that launched in 2000.
Kiper is also analyst for "College GameDay" on ESPN Radio, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays throughout the season. Additionally, he is a frequent contributor to ESPN's award-winning "SportsCenter" during the NFL and college football seasons and provides occasional updates throughout the year.
Kiper is president of Kiper Enterprises, which he founded in 1981 while in college. It is responsible for all aspects of a series of annual publications including the "NFL Draft Report" and "Draft Preview."
His continuous, yearlong research is aided by an office equipped with satellite dishes allowing him to pick up 20 to 25 college games each week. This adds to his in-depth knowledge gathered from lengthy discussions with coaches, players and team executives.
Kiper, born July 25, 1960, attended Essex Community College in
Baltimore

It sounds like anyone of us given the oppurtunity and connections

Yea, sounds like any of us. I can't count how many CP members started an NFL draft publication business in college that blossomed into a 20+ year TV career.

Why do you think he got the opportunity, and where did he get the connections?

Stop and think about it. He's practically the only person in the world with that job. If it's so damn easy, don't you think others would be doing it? If he's so damn bad at it, why hasn't he been replaced?

Easy the same reason why other "broadcasters" aren't replaced, because of continuity with producers, and again luck. Their's other magazines that are doing the same thing Kiper was the 1st to hit the market if he wasn't hired on ESPN then that guy would've done the samething. It's all about luck

Highlighted all the wrong stuff there, bud.

It sounds like he was way ahead of his time and made the most of his knowledge, showcasing it and making it sought after.

We should all be so fortunate.
