Crazy prediction: Donald Stephenson gets traded during the preseason.

I look at this OL depth, and I see one player that doesn't belong.

At left tackle, we have Branden Albert and Eric Fisher backing him up.

At left guard, we have Jeff Allen with Geoff Schwartz playing swing guard.

At center, we have Rodney Hudson and Eric Kush.

Right guard, Jon Asamoah with Schwartz backing up.

At right tackle, we have Eric Fisher with coach-favorite Matt Reynolds on board.

I think Donald Stephenson is the odd man out.

That said, he has starting ability, and the Chiefs don't want to simply cut the guy. So I believe they play him a ton in the preseason, then try to swing a deal for him.

Under normal circumstances, I think you could score a 4th for him, or even trick a team into getting your 3rd rounder back that you spent on him. But given that teams only trade with us when they can rape us (thanks to the Javier Arenas trade...), I don't know if we'll be able to get anything higher than a 5th.

What's the point? Nobody will give up anything for him, he's a valuable swing depth tackle, and he costs nothing to keep.

Fisher, Albert, Allen, Hudson, Asamoah, Stephenson, Schwartz and Kush are likely locks to make this roster. Reynolds is the one that is the only possible guy in jeopardy but I think we carry 9 OL. Having Stephnson, Schwartz and Kush as depth is something we just aren't use to... they aren't just bodies either but players that have potential to be good starters.

This.

You don't trade a guy who is 6'6 1/2", 315 lbs. with 36" arms and ran a sub-5.00 40.

Stephenson is an absolute freak of nature that has excellent feet and a natural slide.

As Milk said, this guy has more potential than either Albert or Fisher.

Personally, I think that they lock up Albert long term and give him the money then move him into the LG position. Fisher moves over to LT and Stephenson is your RT.

Reynolds is a better guard prospect than a tackle IMO, and think he'd be balls at either spot.

LT: Fisher
LG: Albert
C: Hudson
RG: Reynolds
RT: Stephenson

Either that or they trade Albert early in the season and go with:

LT: Fisher
LG: Reynolds
C: Hudson
RG: Schwartz
RT: Stephenson

Backups for either situation are Allen and Schwartz and you have a potentially dominant offensive line either way.

The way I see it, Albert is looking as the odd man out at either tackle spot from a long term perspective as both Fisher and Stephenson have a better skill set for the position.

Why?

I think it's pretty spot on.

He's more athletic than either Fisher or Albert, already has better feet than Albert and is absolutely prototype for the tackle position.

As I've said, I think that if Stephenson stayed in school for his senior year, he would have been in the mix for the first tackle off the board in the 2013 draft. His former OU teammate Lane Johnson went #4 overall to the Eagles in this past draft and Stephenson was hands down better than Johnson on the same team during the 2011 season.

Have you seen Stephenson's measurables? His burst numbers are absolutely sick for a guy his size. The guy is a freak.

Entrenched guys at the position, learning the NFL game, etc. I don't think people realize how difficult the transition is from college to the NFL for offensive linemen. It takes a couple of years.

You could make the same argument about Schwartz as well. There were many Vikings fans who were pissed that they let Schwartz go and kept Brandon Fusco. Schwartz was a guy who put up a +19.2 PFF rating in the 2010 season with Carolina playing mainly RG (also some RT). That's not chopped liver.

Reynolds was a former HS All-American, and a First Team Freshman All-American and four time First Team All-Conference player at BYU. Mike Mayock had him going in the first round of his preseason 2011 mock draft. They guy can play. But I think his best position in the NFL is at guard.

Line depth is too important to Reid. If the D line doesn't show moxie this season, look for high drafts to begin at those positions. Yay.
