Game manager. What is that exactly?
During the course of the season the term 'game manager' has been used frequently to describe certain QB's in the league; usually in a negative sense. I was curious if there is a consensus on just what the heck that means to people here.

To me a game manager isn't a bad thing. I see it as someone who tries to keep moving the chains, and if that takes three plays of 4 yard gains, be it running or passing, that's ok as long as the chains keep moving.

Of course if the team is down by several scores, or time becomes an issue, then longer chunks of yardage would be necessary. To me a game manager would recognize that fact and try to manage the game accordingly at that point.

What do you all think? And is the opposite of a game manager a game mis-manager?

I may be wrong, but I feel like "game manager" and "franchise quarterback" are terms that weren't used until maybe a couple years ago?

If that's true, I would say it's the media's attempt to put more attention on the QB, since the league is lead by QB's nowadays.

A Quarterback's job is to keep the chains moving and put the team in a position to score, and at the same time, preventing the team from being put in a bad position. Game Manager QB's as well as Playmaker QB's do this. QB's that fail to do both of these things are just bad QB's.

A game manager is a guy who throws for less than 25 touchdowns in his "career year". An elite guy throws for 40-50 touchdowns and/or wins the Super Bowl in his career year. Hope that helps.

I would say that it's typically not being a playmaker to throw an easy three yard completion on third and two. Or, for that matter, to play field position with a five point lead in the fourth quarter because you know your Defense isn't going to let the other team score. It's all relative.

You have to differentiate between a QB who is a "game manager" and a QB with game management skills that can make plays.

My point is that the internet definition of game manager is different than most coaches definition. I'm real sure that Andy Reid would consider Alex Smith's performance in the playoff game to be as both a game manager and a playmaker.
