The Greatest Movie Franchises of All Time - Championship

Links to preceding threads:

You can view the entire tournament bracket here.

Please vote for the franchise in each pair that you feel is most deserving of being in consideration for the Greatest Movie Franchise of All Time. I'll put one of these up every day or two as we go along. So vote!

Possible Concerns and Responses:
  1. A franchise I like isn't on the list! Too bad. Nominations are closed. This is just a fun offseason diversion, but feel free to complain in the thread if it will make you feel better.
  2. There's something on the list that I don't even think is a franchise! Don't vote for it.
  3. There's something on the list that I don't recognize. Yeah, there are a few that I don't recognize either. If you feel generous, look it up and determine if you think it's worthy. Or just don't vote for it. Either option is allowed.
  4. The seeding seems weird (or there's something I have no idea how it got in there). The seeding is based on total estimated tickets from Box Office Mojo, but some older franchises were randomly seeded since we don't have any data available about their ticket sales. Again, if you don't feel something is deserving, don't vote for it!

You actually think Star Wars' age is working AGAINST it? That's crazy. I LOVE Star Wars, but it's legend has grown over the years beyond what's warranted. Especially considering the unwatchable mess of episodes 1-3.

Great (IMO) movies in the MCU:
Iron Man
CA: TFA
Avengers
CA: TWS
GOTG
Ant-Man
CA: CW
Doctor Strange
GOTG2
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Ragnarok
Black Panther
Infinity War
Captain Marvel
Endgame

Great movies in SW:
New Hope
Empire Strikes Back

TURDS:
Marvel: IM3, Ultron
SW: Phantom Menace, Clone Wars, most of Sith, ANH, TLJ

MCU: 15 great out of 22 IMO, 2 turds
SW: 2 great out of 8, 4-1/2 turds

This is no contest. The MCU kicks the shit out of the Star Wars films. The first SW film was one of the most amazing in history because it was a fortutitous combination of special effects and storytelling (although the story is a ripoff of Japanese cinema) at a specific point in time. "A New Hope" is like The Beatles: it can't be measured outside of when it happened. "Empire" was a very solid follow-up. The rest has sucked balls. The MCU, on the other hand, has produced consistenly entertaining and very solid offerings.

I suppose the upcoming episode IX could have Han Solo’s kid exiled from that galaxy and he ends up on earth, starts a family and one of his kids begets someone who, begets someone, who begets someone, and so one and so forth until Henry “Indiana” Jones comes into the world. That would tie the two stories together and use genetics to explain Harrison Ford used as two different people in the same universe.

I have seen the pop cultural argument in one form or another throughout this tournament. I fail to see how it is a relevant argument between these two. I see MCU references and merchandise everywhere and on the same scale if not beyond what I see from Star Wars. The phone I am using to type this response is in a Captain America case. RDJ’s portrayal of Iron Man is not only beloved but will likely be considered iconic in time if it is not already. “The snap” is referenced in multiple ways throughout our society.

I voted MCU but I am not hard fast on it. And if this was a vote on the totality of franchises and not just films I’d probably vote the other way. I say this to show that my point is not about arguing in favor of the MCU but, to argue the pop culture angle. I just don’t see it here.

You’re welcome to your opinion, but there is just no way to leave out the influence SW had on not only movie making itself, but pop culture in general when discussing the merits of the two IMO

Well hell, if that's our metric, Steamboat Willie (the first Mickey Mouse cartoon) should have topped the list.

Do you dispute that either 1) the first commercially successful cartoon completely changed what people thought of as what a movie even is or that 2) Mickey Mouse has had a huge influence on pop culture? Those are the two criteria you mentioned. I don't think that it's even debatable that both of those traits are far stronger for Steamboat Willie than they were for Star Wars.

I'm not arguing that it SHOULD be at the top of this competition. I'm just suggesting that your criteria are clearly a bit flawed.

You’re talking about a cartoon from the 30s that while revolutionary was also just a cartoon... not a movie with live actors and real FX

Are you disputing that cartoons are a viable form of film? We had a number of cartoon franchises nominated for this tournament, some of which (Toy Story and Shrek) even won their original matchups. Not only that, but you could argue that cartoons are the predecessor to all video effects, again pointing to the huge influence that Mickey Mouse has had on the film industry as a whole.

My point really is that it's easy to have a big influence on the industry in the early days since there was much less established as you go earlier in time. That's why your criteria alone don't really add up to much.
