I turned it off right after it was over and haven't paid attention to anything sports related until an hour ago. It stung a bit, but ultimately the loss has no bearing on my life, so I'm fine. Back in my younger days, a loss like that would haunt me for at least a week.

It’s a gut punch and it hurts. There’s no way around it. I probably won’t even watch the Super Bowl this year. That’s just part of being a fan. The highs make you feel like you’re on top of the world but season ending losses make you feel like shit. Going to purge myself of sports media for awhile and focus on other things. I trust Veach in the offseason to make the right moves and I believe we’ll be back but it’s best to try to put yesterday’s embarrassment out of your mind

It was fun while it lasted. The Chiefs are in a rebuilding period now, whether they know it or not. We'll be in the hunt for a playoff spot, but I wouldn't count on any championships for a few years.

The goal-line sequence at the end of regulation is the worst part of that game for me by a long shot. The play before halftime was a gaffe, and hurt us. But the series at the end of the game haunts me. We have Patrick Mahomes II, so it never even occurred to me that they wouldn't score a touchdown. I was busy watching the clock, and while running seemed like an obvious thing to do, I'll never complain about Patrick Mahomes having the ball in his hands. That's a good observation about a pass play either stopping the clock or scoring too quickly, though. I hadn't thought about it that way. That situation might explain why he was scrambling in the backfield and not just running it in or throwing.

Still shaking my head over the 2nd half. WTF? Ok, reload and be back next year, I guess.

Part of me wants to throw up because we had the table set perfectly and then decided to flip it over right at meal time. And part of me wants to take a breath and realize that in four years starting with Mahomes, his worst finish has been a loss in the AFCCG (both times in OT). For 22 years I was just hoping for a playoff win.
So I'm frustrated with how the season ended. But elated at the heights we've risen to. And mad at Mahomes for not pulling the trigger to Kelce in the end zone. But glad he's our QB because without him, we wouldn't have won it all. So I'm in that frustlated/glamad area. |

I'll also comment that 17 games is too long of a season. I know it's only one extra game, but between that and the playoffs I felt like this season was going on forever. I love football and the Chiefs, but part of its appeal is scarcity.

I’d feel better if the Bungles had dominated the Chiefs instead of the crap I witnessed in the second half.

Meeting and hanging out with a bunch of CPers prior to the game really took the sting out of that spectacular 2nd half meltdown. That opportunity will allow me to look back on this game with some positive memories despite Scooby Do pulling the mask off of Mahomes to show it was Matt Cassel playing the 2nd half.
Post-game I self pity crushed a Gates mixed plate before heading straight to the hotel where I watched episodes of 90 Day Fiancée before getting a couple hours of trash sleep. Seriously, there's a Russian little person on this show. She's got a full grown head and tits on a defective midget body. It just felt like the right thing to watch at the time instead of the NFCCG. Was dreading the flight home this morning but felt most Bengals fan were hungover as they were mostly slow moving and quiet. Tip of the cap to them I guess. From here I'll unplug from all things Chiefs and focus on work and some personal projects. It was a shitty way to go out, but nothing another nights sleep won't firmly place on the backburner of my mind. ![]() |

Last night and this morning were a little worse for me than yesterday, which was less painful than other playoff losses for me because of the Chiefs winning it all a couple of years ago. I am so glad we have Mahomes and I think his performance in the 2nd half, where he seemed a bit amped up and wasn't quite on target will be a particular motivation for him this offseason and he'll come back stronger than ever. I'm glad he's not going to have to be dealing with surgery and recovery from it this offseason, unlike last year. Given the challenges he had this year, being a new dad, coming back from surgery, dealing with defensive schemes that slowed him down, I think it's impressive that we got this far, but it stings that we were favorites and had a 21-10 lead at half, which really should have been 24-10, except for a bad decision on Mahomes' part.
I did a couple of productive things to deal with the loss, including bagging up three more bags of clothes to donate to Salvation Army and running 10 miles this morning at a much faster pace than I could have done two years ago...I've lost a little over 90 pounds during this pandemic and try to remember that there are things I can control and things I can't. Sports outcomes for the Chiefs and Royals are in the latter. ![]() |

It’s the most crushing playoff loss in Chiefs history.
Worse than any of the playoff losses during the Marty-era… the limitations of Steve Bono and Elvis Grbac getting exposed in those playoff heartbreaks were understandable. The (in)famous Christmas Day playoff loss to the Dolphins in 1971 was in the Divisional Round and didn’t involve blowing an 18 point lead. Blowing a 21-3 lead to an inferior opponent at Arrowhead when your all world franchise QB collapses in the second half and can’t come through to win the game with a first and goal late in the 4th quarter and then getting the ball first in OT? I can rationalize choking with Steve Bono, Elvis Grbac or Alex Smiff… not with Mahomes when he is the primary reason for the collapse. |
