The only success that matters in the long run is playoff success, and if he has that, he'll certainly win me over, since it would mean he's not the QB that he's proven to be for the past 8+ years. Being able to play with the big boys in the regular season can go a long way, too, but it's the NFL, so the chances aren't there very often.

If they get swept by the Broncos, lose to the Colts, etc; and then go one and done in the playoffs, it's certainly not time to panic... but, it would obviously be disappointing if they turned around and signed Smith to a long term deal with no thought to drafting another QB, even if it would be just another Chiefs offseason.

Well, Alex is 1-1 in the playoffs. One impressive game, and one "not so much."

But really, wouldn't you want to draft a QB anyway?

Yeah, it helps when QB's get hurt and miss some games, however I think Wilson and Newton also pass Alice up if they stay healthy. Of course right now that fact that some teams have had a bye week and some have not make that stat irrelevant. It's more about YPG and Alice is still 25th in that.

Yeah, that's been a dream of mine for about 20 years... live long enough to see the Chiefs draft a QB in the first round. When they picked up Smith, that was the best case scenario as far as I'm concerned... let Smith help bring the team back to respectability, knowing a QB will need to be drafted sooner than later. If Smith proves otherwise, it's not as urgent of a need obviously, but would still be nice.

This is exactly what I have thought since they traded for him. This team was never going to turn the ship around going 5-11. You have to have the players actively wanting to participate and improve. How much more willing are they to come in for extra film sessions, extra lifting sessions, staying late with postion coaches and playing 100% every snap, when they know their QB won't just piss the game away with a turnover in his own red zone?

Two second round picks wasn't the cost of a starting QB. It was the cost of a complete paradigm shift for the whole organization.

I still hold out hope that a QB will be selected in the first round this year or next.

Smith is struggling to put up great numbers, that's obvious. I can give him a pass against the Texans because this is a team that has the No 1 defense and held Russell Wilson to 12/23 for 123 and 1 pick. In fact Smith is the only QB this year to pass for over 200 yards against them IIRC.

That said, he's going to need to pick it up against some of the more mediocre defenses we play in the 2nd half of the season...

It certainly worked out well for the Packers, and I think CK benefited from not being thrown into the fire as a rookie.

One interesting question that will never be answered is if the Niners had drafted Aaron Rodgers instead of Alex Smith, whether they would have ruined him the way the Niners ruined Alex.
