LNBS: Can Alex Smith be a Franchise Quarterback?

He has been playing at a high level the last few games.

Was it just the defenses he faced being bad, or is he thinking less and therefore playing faster?

He is pushing the ball down the field a lot more. His passes are coming out on time more frequently. He is throwing into tight windows. He is using his mobility as a weapon. His ball placement has been pretty good.

I view a "franchise quarterback" as a guy that you can get to championship games with and a guy that gives you a chance to win a superbowl.

If you were to ask me a few weeks ago if Alex can be that guy, I'd laugh and discard that notion.

Now, I'm not so sure.

Have the last few games changed your opinion of Alex?

I think a lot of you need to go back and rewatch that Denver game without "the emotion of the moment".

Alex played a whale of a game.

If he gave us that level of play every week, he would be in the next elite class once Manning, Brady and Brees begin to decline.

I'm actually pretty excited to watch it all play out.

If they can upgrade from Avery at the second receiver spot to a legit NFL #2, the line continues to protect and Alex continues to grow into the position...this can be a pretty potent offense going forward.

Mix that with a young, up and coming defense with talent at all levels and te future is bright in KC.

-hoping posts like this don't come back and burn me-

Wow, that is a switch on your part. At one time, you wouldn't even give him credit for the one GOOD game he had as a Chief. The Seattle game, when he looked like a legit QB.

He was a competent field general.

Vs SD he had some very questionable throws but he lead the team down the field to score the game winner. The D puked up that game as well.

2nd Den game he $#it bed in the first half and roared the 2nd. Problem was the 2nd half no one could catch and our D played like total dog$#it.

As a whole, as a complete team, we are still heavy with crap-tastic talent.

It was never going to be fixed in 1 year.

It is what it is - an amazing first year in a rebuild.

If you expect or demand more than that I suppose that's more on who you are than they are...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

He didn't ask if you could win a SB with him. He asked if he was a franchise QB. Of course you could win one with him. You could theoretically win one with basically any QB if you build a strong enough defense and running game and get every possible bounce to go your way...

Tony Romo is significantly better at the QB position than Alex Smith. Is Tony Romo a "franchise QB?"

There are certainly QBs in the league better than Romo but I wouldn't complain one bit to have Romo be my QB for 5+ years.

I don't necessarily think in todays NFL you can build a defense that strong anyway.

I'd take 2 or 3 guys over Romo right now, in the entire NFL.

He's abosutely a franchise QB and he's damn close to being an elite.

Romo might be on the fringe of what I would consider to be in that category. Smith certainly isn't near that fringe.

I guess we have different definitions of franchise QB, then. I'd put him more around 8-10.

Romo?

I've always thought Romo gets a bad rap in Dallas for being a "choker". He's carried a shit roster for the better part of the past 5 years.

Obviously you've got your Manning, Brady, and Brees, but IMHO, Romo is Rodgers without a SB win.
