If you convert a contract, you give the player the money in a lump sum and it just prorates the salary cap impact. The only way you get out of that is if you make the player pay the money back due to violation. Much more difficult to do.

You convert contract to bonus for younger players that you're sure you will want to complete the contract.

Bowes base salary for 2014 is about 8.5 million and is signed for another 4 years.

If they convert 8 million of that to a bonus, it clears 8 million in cap space this year and adds 2 million a year for the next 4 years to the cap.

My point is, this team needs to make a run at trying to beat Peyton Manning in the next 2 years if we are gonna win anything significant with guys like Hali, DJ, Colquitt and Bowe... for us to even have a chance at accomplishing that, we need fairly major upgrades at 2 safety spots, at least 1 good receiver, a really good tight end, another pass rusher that can be counted on to create pressure and for Alex to continue to grow into the role of franchise quarterback.

This team is up against the cap and will have less than 8 million to spend in FA by only rolling over the 2.5 from this year, cutting Dunta and having the cap go up to 128.5.

We need to make some room to add at least 2 playmakers and making a move like that with a couple deals would make a lot of sense.

Otherwise, they might as well wave a white flag the next 2-3 years.
