Yeah, not good news. He absolutely shouldn't play again this year if it's going to risk his future. That puts an end to any realistic chance this team had at winning this year, but crazier things have happened in this tournament. Lesser expectations and no Embiid could actually get the others to focus more.

I think that could be selling a us a little short. I mean, we do have quite a few weapons that could string together some really good outings the final few weeks of the season. We've all seen Perry go off at times, Selden, Tharpe etc. Heck, even Tarrik is coming on down the stretch here. We just need them to play as well as we all know they can down this final stretch. You never know, they could play with a chip on their shoulders with Embiid gone trying to prove to us that even without him they still have a high ceiling if they all just play the way they are capable of.

KU was a top 3 team with a healthy Embiid. Without him, they're probably closer to top 15 or top 20. They can still get hot and pick up some wins obviously like many teams do in the tournament, but the margin for error just dropped considerably. Without much of a defense, there will be no playing bad games and getting away with it this time.

Precisely. The margin for error, especially defensively is so, so, slim.

I agree. I've never really care what seed we are and don't know why people get so caught up in it. I moreso just care about the matchups. So many teams get underseeded just to follow the bracket rules that getting a higher seed doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get a good matchup after the first game. All it does is give you a favorable first game, after that... you might be playing a really bad matchup just because this SEC/Big East/Big Ten etc team couldn't play in this region so we had to move them over here and down a seed etc.

If you're looking for a bright side, entering elimination games without huge expectations as a fan lessens the blow of the inevitable loss. And make no mistake, in this crazy crapshoot of a tournament, a loss to end the season was always far more likely than a win. I think KenPom's system would have put the odds at somewhere around 10%, maybe a little less. Now we're probably closer to 1-2%.

That said, I just hope we get through the first one to save any real embarrassment. Wiggins and company can at least manage that, right?

Maybe, if you lied and said Alexander was eligible for the NCAA tournament or if Embiid said he was coming back next year. Those might help a little bit.

Yes, the benefit of the high seed is pretty much just the first game (as the 16s are usually quite awful). It's a virtual bye for those top 4 (whereas sometimes you'll find pretty competitive 14s and 15s). But after that, it's all very much even ground for everybody.

I've experienced so many ridiculously unlikely crushing losses over just the last calendar year (KU vs. Michigan, Leafs vs. Bruins, Chiefs vs. Colts) that it's something. Of course, with that kind of sports luck, maybe this KU team will make an improbable run to the NC anyway and lose on a final shot.
