Executives crying foul over Emmanuel Sanders deal

Emmanuel Sanders is expected to sign with the Broncos tomorrow, but the process that led him there left the other teams involved fuming and crying foul. One team official claimed Sanders' agent broke "every rule in negotiations."

Agent Steve Weinberg, on behalf of the receiver, accepted a deal with the Chiefs in principle, according to one team source. Weinberg then engaged in negotiations with the Tampa Bay Bucs, according to another source involved in the process.

While shopping the Chiefs offer to the Bucs, Weinberg never explained that he had already accepted the terms of Kansas City's offer. Later in the night, Sanders' agent had agreed to terms with the Broncos, which is where he is currently headed. Sanders and Weinberg also rankled the 49ers by agreeing to visit, then blowing it off.

"This was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiations," one executive involved said. "Totally wrong. This needs to be stopped."

Reached at his home late Saturday, Weinberg declined to comment on the record when informed of the allegations.

The Dallas-based agent was recently reinstated by the NFL Players Association, which had barred and decertified him in 2003 because it had reportedly found he diverted assets to an offshore account during a dispute with a partner and collecting a fee from a client prematurely. Weinberg later filed suit against the NFLPA and its top officials, alleging they illegally took away his certification for eight years, along with past, present and future income of clients.

Weinberg has two clients currently on NFL teams, not including Sanders. He had 42 before he was barred.

While Weinberg broke no laws in accepting a deal, the entire situation infuriated those he dealt with. It is commonly accepted in the league that once two sides agree to a deal -- in writing or in handshake form -- that's the end of the story. Instead, by Weinberg shopping the Chiefs deal and then not informing the Bucs that a deal had been reached showed another side of the business. It is unclear if the Broncos were aware of the previous actions.

"When a man gives you his words and pulls out," one executive said, "then gives another team your word and pulls out, then gives another team his word ... Not proper."

Cooper - 5 year, $25 mil deal

Roberts - 4 year, $16 mil deal

Tate - 5 year, $31 mil deal

I'd guess that Sanders is asking for something closer to what Tate got but would settle for a Cooper deal.

So really, up to Clark on what he wants to pony up front.

He's not a game changer. If he was, a) he would have scored a bigger contract from the Titans, and b) we wouldn't have let him go in the first place, cap be damned.

Good player, not great. There are a ton of McClusters out there. Sanders is an instant upgrade to what McCluster brought to our passing game, and time will tell if it really was DMC giving us filed position or Toub's schemes with whomever we have returning punts this year.

Again, I don't hate him, but it's been shown by our front office that he wasn't an integral piece of this team.

Personally, I think Wisenhunt is going to get him killed using him more as a running back with the Titans.

Dave Toub really made people believe that DMC is something he isnt.

See the Giants game? What about the very first time he touched the ball in the NFL?? CHANGED BOTH GAMES. Also set KC up with a short field most every game last season. THAT, my friend, IS a game-changer. Everything I said about him trending upward is correct. He clearly did that under Reid year 1. Dont justify your take of the guy based on the Titans deal. Thats just as flawed as skewing stats to present a point of view. Also, our front office thought enough of him to go to him a lot on 3rd down last season and enough to offer him a deal, just not as much $$$ as Tennessee did. Can his production be replaced? Yes. However, make no mistake Dex will be missed. If our return game suffers this year, remember all of us who wanted Dex to stay. Anyway, I think it was a mistake to let him walk but I realize the business side of things. The only reason Im talking about it now is because you called me out, to another poster, on the subject.

Yup. There's a reason why the Steelers are letting him walk. They wanted to hold on to him last season because they thought he would break out. He didn't and is just an average 2 to solid slot Wr. However, in the right system, he might be able to get those numbers.
