WR Emmanuel Sanders signs with Denver - Executives cry foul

Executives crying foul over Emmanuel Sanders deal

Emmanuel Sanders is expected to sign with the Broncos tomorrow, but the process that led him there left the other teams involved fuming and crying foul. One team official claimed Sanders' agent broke "every rule in negotiations."

Agent Steve Weinberg, on behalf of the receiver, accepted a deal with the Chiefs in principle, according to one team source. Weinberg then engaged in negotiations with the Tampa Bay Bucs, according to another source involved in the process.

While shopping the Chiefs offer to the Bucs, Weinberg never explained that he had already accepted the terms of Kansas City's offer. Later in the night, Sanders' agent had agreed to terms with the Broncos, which is where he is currently headed. Sanders and Weinberg also rankled the 49ers by agreeing to visit, then blowing it off.

"This was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiations," one executive involved said. "Totally wrong. This needs to be stopped."

Reached at his home late Saturday, Weinberg declined to comment on the record when informed of the allegations.

The Dallas-based agent was recently reinstated by the NFL Players Association, which had barred and decertified him in 2003 because it had reportedly found he diverted assets to an offshore account during a dispute with a partner and collecting a fee from a client prematurely. Weinberg later filed suit against the NFLPA and its top officials, alleging they illegally took away his certification for eight years, along with past, present and future income of clients.

Weinberg has two clients currently on NFL teams, not including Sanders. He had 42 before he was barred.

While Weinberg broke no laws in accepting a deal, the entire situation infuriated those he dealt with. It is commonly accepted in the league that once two sides agree to a deal -- in writing or in handshake form -- that's the end of the story. Instead, by Weinberg shopping the Chiefs deal and then not informing the Bucs that a deal had been reached showed another side of the business. It is unclear if the Broncos were aware of the previous actions.

"When a man gives you his words and pulls out," one executive said, "then gives another team your word and pulls out, then gives another team his word ... Not proper."

4 poems in 3 weeks. If your plans included commissioning a Todd Collins poetry collection, you should have made the bet with someone who has more than 4k posts in 7 years.

Four posts in three weeks. Exactly my point.

During this past season you posted PLENTY of shit. Hell, that goes for last offseason too. Certainly more than four posts every 21 days.

I expected more than four poems, dude. You "paid" the bet much like that shit**** Weinberg "followed the rules" of contract negotiations. And much like Weinberg, people are going to tell you to go **** yourself when you want to have fun in the future.

You all are whining for no good reason...it was all above board.
Sanders and Elway said so
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap200...al-with-chiefs

Emmanuel Sanders says he agreed to join only one team this weekend -- and that was the Denver Broncos.
Free-Agent Tracker
Follow all the developments on the NFL's open market with our up-to-the-minute tracking of 2014's free agents. More...

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that Sanders' agent, Steve Weinberg, negotiated with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite having an agreement in principle with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Sanders also blew off a previously scheduled meeting with the San Francisco 49ers, leading one NFL executive to fume that "(t)his was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiations."
During his introductory news conference in Denver on Sunday to announce his signing, Sanders denied he agreed with any team aside from the Broncos.
"That entire situation is a business ordeal that some people are turning into a personal matter," Sanders said. "Situations like that happen all the time over the National Football League.

"There was no handshake," Sanders added. "There was no kind of agreement in terms of -- you know -- we were close to a deal, but it wasn't anything official just yet."
Sanders added that Weinberg "did an exceptional job" in navigating him to Denver and added that playing with Peyton Manning "is like wide receiver heaven."
Sanders might have reached pass-catcher nirvana, but how he got there wasn't pretty -- whether he wants to acknowledge it or not.

I can see one 15-yard penalty solving part of the issue here. And the Chiefs have 120 minutes of game-time to enact the fix.

And wow, those other guys he represents must be shopping for a new agent... I can't imagine many NFL GMs taking his call unless they are desperate for players in the positions he represents. So they may not bar him again, they may just agree to never take his calls.

Yup... It's not amazing to me to see the current Chiefs franchise avoided by players who want to win (now OR later) if they have other viable options. Forty-three years of no SB has a way of setting a tone for a team's determination to win.

It's going to take some very dramatic steps by the Chiefs to change that perception, and so far, other than some historically successful head coaches (and some GMs who seemed serviceable [when they were hired]), they've never done more than a couple of bold moves that lit-up the printing presses.

Going back a few years when they waited one year to "Suck for Luck", doing very dramatic things to get things done is obviously lost on this franchise. Add to that sitting by and witnessing Denver go all-in for a SB run again this year, and it's just amazing.

Now this all-in run might backfire on the Broncos, but at least they're trying, and they can't wait for a year when the schedule will be as soft as it was for the AFCW last year. But credit them for trying before Elway goes away. We'll get another RT I'm sure!

But alas, what the agent did was shit (even if not illegal), and I don't think it'll be left unrewarded over the coming years by those who's trust and "unwritten rules" he violated.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Too much emotion being spent on this. If the guy didn't want to play for us, regardless of what his agent said, then why do we even care? Let EB or Houston take his head off in a game next year and move on.
