WR Emmanuel Sanders signs with Denver - Executives cry foul

Executives crying foul over Emmanuel Sanders deal

Emmanuel Sanders is expected to sign with the Broncos tomorrow, but the process that led him there left the other teams involved fuming and crying foul. One team official claimed Sanders' agent broke "every rule in negotiations."

Agent Steve Weinberg, on behalf of the receiver, accepted a deal with the Chiefs in principle, according to one team source. Weinberg then engaged in negotiations with the Tampa Bay Bucs, according to another source involved in the process.

While shopping the Chiefs offer to the Bucs, Weinberg never explained that he had already accepted the terms of Kansas City's offer. Later in the night, Sanders' agent had agreed to terms with the Broncos, which is where he is currently headed. Sanders and Weinberg also rankled the 49ers by agreeing to visit, then blowing it off.

"This was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiations," one executive involved said. "Totally wrong. This needs to be stopped."

Reached at his home late Saturday, Weinberg declined to comment on the record when informed of the allegations.

The Dallas-based agent was recently reinstated by the NFL Players Association, which had barred and decertified him in 2003 because it had reportedly found he diverted assets to an offshore account during a dispute with a partner and collecting a fee from a client prematurely. Weinberg later filed suit against the NFLPA and its top officials, alleging they illegally took away his certification for eight years, along with past, present and future income of clients.

Weinberg has two clients currently on NFL teams, not including Sanders. He had 42 before he was barred.

While Weinberg broke no laws in accepting a deal, the entire situation infuriated those he dealt with. It is commonly accepted in the league that once two sides agree to a deal -- in writing or in handshake form -- that's the end of the story. Instead, by Weinberg shopping the Chiefs deal and then not informing the Bucs that a deal had been reached showed another side of the business. It is unclear if the Broncos were aware of the previous actions.

"When a man gives you his words and pulls out," one executive said, "then gives another team your word and pulls out, then gives another team his word ... Not proper."

Weinberg says the Chiefs and Bus are butt-hurt

""If we reached or agreed to terms with the Chiefs, we would have signed with Kansas City and never turned back," Weinberg said. "There were absolutely no handshakes, verbal agreements or signed documents when Sanders left the Chiefs facility. Emmanuel was on his way to the airport when teams called us. We didn’t ‘shop any deals’ or ‘reach out’ to a single team. My fiduciary responsibility is to the players I represent and not to the NFL teams or their 'good ole boys' tactics.
"I am sorry if I upset any of the teams, but I know they realize my contractual and fiduciary duties are always going to benefit my client, Emmanuel Sanders. As everyone in the NFL knows, a deal is not a deal until it’s signed and approved by the league office. I'm so happy for and proud of Emmanuel. He was patient throughout the whole free-agent process and received a fair deal from one of the best teams in the entire league, a championship contender, with Hall of Fame quarterbacks running everything both on and off the field. This was his hope from the very beginning of our relationship.”
I'm guessing you aren't aware Sanders agent has been decertified by the league once before already. Dude is a scumbag.

Technically, Weinberg broke no CBA laws or NFLPA provisions with his alleged actions in Sanders’ free agency process. But the agent, who had 42 clients before he was decertified and now has just a handful, may find dealing with NFL teams difficult in future.

Who cares, most of us know the deal. And I'm sure the player will always go for a team that's prolly paying more, and has a chance/history of success.

This is first-grade math my friend... Perhaps the other more historically successful teams might have a valid grips, but the Chiefs front office needs to realize they're fighting much more than a cap and tough schedule next year, they have a history that everybody knows. They need to deal with that and so far this offseason they've not done much to fix anything.

There's a pretty simple question that arises out of the new article: if he really had a done deal with KC, why was he on the way to the airport to see another team?

Do you know what this story has in common with Elway's comment about not knowing about a pending contract with the Chiefs?

Both stories are bullshit.

Most of the god damn team is made up of free agents.

You're underselling some pretty good drafts by Denver, with plenty of players who have made an impact in the last two years:

Knowshon Moreno, Ryan Clady, Robert Ayers, Eric Decker, Zane Beadles, Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas, Orlando Franklin, Rahim Moore, Von Miller, Montee Ball, Derek Wolfe, Ronnie Hillman, Danny Trevathan,

That's like 15 guys who were starters last year. You're right that there are plenty of free agents, but to say that the Broncos drafts don't really factor in here is totally wrong. They're the keystone of our recent success.

Um, without Manning they're nothing. Your recent success starts and ends with him - including attracting and signing free agents. To exclude Manning from any recent success discussion is totally wrong...
