Florida Kayaker Towed for Hours by 11 Foot Hammerhead Shark (Video)

damn. extreme anglers indeed.

Florida Atlantic University student Adam Fisk, 22, was fishing in his kayak Sunday near Boynton Beach, Fla., when he hooked a pretty unusual catch: an 11-foot hammerhead shark, which took Fisk on a two-hour, 12-mile ride, captured on Fisk's helmet camera.

"Hooked a hammerhead in 50 ft. of water and got drug out to 250 ft.," Fisk wrote on Facebook, according to Reuters. "I took a South Florida sleigh ride today and I ain't talking Santa Claus." According to the video, at one point he was being chased by one hammerhead while being towed by the one on his line, which gives the Spinal Tap album Shark Sandwich a whole new meaning.

"I threw my bait out and went to reel my other one in so I wouldn't get tangled, and I just had time to pick up the rod before the other one already got picked up by that hammer," Fisk added.

Fisk belongs to Team Rebel Fishing, a group of extreme anglers.

Pics aren’t coming through for me. Got a link to them or something?

The fish is injured (hooked) and in a fight for it’s life. They literally expend every ounce of energy they have trying to get away. If not properly revived by forcing water through their gills they can very easily die.

Ok. I've heard sharks need to continually swimming in order to push water through their gills for oxygen but wasn't sure if that was the actual cause of death.

That goes for about any fish that’s in an extended fight.
I fought a 45lb flathead for around 15 minutes, seemed a lot longer when he was spooling my line out, and it took quite a while to revive him. I had to drag him back and forth through the water for several minutes before he finally came to and quit going belly up.

It's much more than that.

Sharks can't "rest". They don't have swim bladders nor do they have any means to express water through their gills.

This is why they can't survive a long fight while most bony fish can...

You guys should check out http://www.ocearch.org/ They have attached trackers to some great whites so you can chart their progress around the world.

Last fall one of their tagged sharks was swimming around right outside the breakers here, just blocks from my house. Those things and the rays you can see out there would make me a bit uneasy about being out in a kayak, but I'm sure that guy has a blast doing it.
