Adam Schefter said on NFL insiders today that Alex will most likely get an extension before the start of 2014. That's interesting because we don't have much cap space left (around 5 million) and the rookies get paid out of that amount.

That leaves about 2m left unless someone else also signs an extension that lowers his cap number (Berry, Hali, etc)....that would mean Alex would be signing a contract that would have a low first year salary and bigger cap numbers in the future.

Not sure how I feel about that because if the total deal averages lets say 16 million and his first year only hits for 9, that means he would have to have a year or 2 with a cap hit near or above 20m.

And now people are starting to understand why we stayed quiet. I am sure he signs with a high bonus and a very low base for year 1. Probably a third year roster bonus kicker. Won't be hard to make him cap friendly without moving a lot of contracts around. I am hoping the chiefs are considering Murray so they can cut Daniel and then you extend Berry to save some money.

He's already under contract for this season. Why does this year's cap matter?

They can make cap room anytime they really want.
