Alex Smith talks going slowly, could pick up after the draft

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith acknowledged on Tuesday that talks aimed at extending a contract that expires after the coming season are underway. And indeed they are.

But a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the discussions are moving very, very slowly.

The discussions could, and likely will, pick up after the draft. If/when an agreement is reached, look for the deal to have a value in the neighborhood of $14 million to $17 million per year. Which would be a very good contract for a guy who was the first pick in the 2005 draft and who was at times regarded as being a borderline bust.

Smith has busted out in a big way the last few years. While it feels like he’s been around forever, Smith still isn’t 30 years old.

That’s true. I checked. Twice. He turns 30 on May 7.

And he’s made plenty of money in the NFL over the last nine years. He could be making a lot more, soon.

He started to raise the level of his play over the course of the last 7 games and the playoff game.

Chemistry was built through the season. New QB, new coach, all new offense, etc...hell, they played it safe and won games early on. Better than shooting from the hip willy nilly and sucking ass big time.

Guys who run into parked vehicles like inmem can't grasp the concept of things not being totally plug and play like on madden.

There were, and are, only a handful of people who didn't recognize Smith's progress over the last 7 games.

You present it as people moving goalposts week to week, and as a majority.

Neither are remotely true.

As a member of the "critical" crowd, I was pleasantly surprised by the progress Alex Smith showed in the second half of the season (from the first San Diego game on, he was very good, aside from the season closing game against Indy). I am cautiously optimistic he can continue to be that guy, but need to see a little bit more before I buy all in on him being that guy.

I don't think it's conclusive to anyone because:
1) The first half of the year he was very average. I don't think I saw him do much a fleet footed rookie couldn't do. We won most of our first 8 due to defense.
The 2nd half the year our defense went flat and we won because Alex made plays, kept drives alive, and scored pts.
2) It was only 1 year.

I don't honestly know how much of (1) was due to Alex or the coaching/play calling. We didn't really open up the offense until we had to.

Which means we just have to rely on our HC/GM.

Which is very ****ing hard to do after the last 7 years...

I'll simply never understand why people point to his best game of the year as a weak spot.

I have no idea whether Smith will become an upper tier QB but complaining about the Indy game is beyond idiotic.

I blame that piss poor field in Indy for that loss more than the offense.

Not sure what he should make .. money wise .. but he did improve in the second half of the season .....

If Alex Smith plays the way he did during the playoff game, he is worth the money.

If he plays a scared game manager style like he did the first half of the season, this will be a giant ripoff that the Chiefs love getting their selves into.

I'll agree. The way he played in that playoff game changed my mind a bit. He'd had some good showings throughout the season; but there was no way I thought he'd be able to get this offense to perform that well. Even if he did come up a little short.

I'm hoping that's the guy we see a whole lot more of next season. But I know better than to get my hopes up for anything Chiefs related.
