Geno performed as well as a rookie QB could with the worst group of skill position players in the the league. His final four games of the 2013 season were very solid.

While helping the Jets go 3-1 in their last four games, Smith completed 68-of-116 passes for 790 yards, four TDs, two INTs and a passer rating of 83.6. He also rushed 31 times for 186 yards and three TDs.

ESPN magazine has a nice write up about Derek Carr. His brother is training him-they get up every morning at 6 and go through a grueling work out and then watch film. David is in prime shape and thinks he can still play somewhere-so maybe that is where the rumour started?

I don't think David ever got over the shell shock. He might have developed into a better QB if Boselli had been able to play and that O-line had been even halfway decent.

Yep. That and had he not been elevated to the Day 1 starter. The plan was for them to sign Rob Johnson as the starter and Carr would be the backup until he was ready. Deal is Johnson agreed in principle to a deal, but opted to re-sign with Buffalo at the last minute, when he was given assurances that he would be the starter. Charlie Casserly, one of the worst GM's on the planet, decided to go with a rookie QB and a terrible OL. Not wise...

I wrote about this possibility well over a week ago in my quarterback story for our NFL Draft preview series, and I also covered it in my draft primer in Sunday’s Star.

The reason I’ve written about this is because I do believe it’s possible the Chiefs will take a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday. I believe Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Doug Pedersen can absolutely get the most out of the likes of Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel or Derek Carr, and by drafting one of them, there’s a potential for enormous cap savings there over the next four years. Alex Smith was very good last year, but he will sign a lucrative extension if he returns.

But is it likely the Chiefs will take a quarterback? I believe it isn’t. Like it or not, the Chiefs surrendered two very valuable second-round picks for Smith. If they draft a quarterback in the first round, it’s essentially a waste of both picks. That’s why I believe it’s more likely the Chiefs will take a quarterback in the mid-to-late rounds. Like I’ve been writing, someone like Aaron Murray fits the Chiefs’ offense.

I also wouldn’t be surprised to see the Chiefs orchestrate some sort of draft-day trade. But I believe it’s far more likely they trade down than trade up. They only have six picks in a deep draft and they have plenty of holes. Trading up would likely require them to give up their third-round pick. I think they’ll be trying to acquire more top-100 picks, not give them up.

Remember guys, this is draft week. That means smokescreens abound. The Chiefs’ interest in a quarterback could also be tied to a desire to put pressure on the Smith camp to agree to an extension and/or entice quarterback-needy teams in the second round to trade with them or ahead of them. Either way, the Chiefs win. If the Chiefs swing a trade down, they get extra picks. If a team trades ahead of them, a player at another position falls. The Chiefs would take either.

This isn't how Hunt, general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid wanted to operate the Chiefs. They have a long-term plan they will adjust as they see fit, but not because they're having trouble signing a key player 10 months before he's scheduled to become a free agent.

That type of move smells not of anything in a long-term plan, but of panic. Make no mistake, if the Chiefs draft a quarterback based on what they believe will be a need next year, that's a panic move. They made a commitment to Smith by trading for him last year and they're ready to scrap him at the first sign of trouble?

And if they panic on this, it follows the Chiefs will panic on other things to come. If they do that, don't plan on another Super Bowl for the Chiefs for a lot of years to come.

No, the Chiefs need to continue to build their team the best way they see fit, regardless of where they are in their negotiations with Smith. If a quarterback is available to the Chiefs on Thursday, they should take him if they believe he's going to be great.

If not and he's merely Plan B in case they can't re-sign Smith, forget about it. Move on to another player at another position.
