Stealing some mojo from another thread, I was curious as to who here has built theiir own computer? If you do, would you mind sharing what hardware/software you're using and what you primarily use the computer for (gaming, home office, etc)?

Also, links would be greatly appreciated to the hardware parts, but if you're too lazy, it's all good. I'm going to start building my own system, and I'm looking for some advice.

I could probably swing that sooner than later to use for gaming and buy some more time before I get the basement office all setup like I want it. I have a case that is still fine, but the guts of it are all seriously outdated.

Looks nice. I wonder how much a comparable system would cost with components ordered separately and built in home.

EDIT - Not bad...just finding as close as I could find on newegg, the total price there came up to $1563

I just had to put one together. Went through Newegg for most of the parts, nice Corsair Full-Tower Case, Corsair 650W Power Supply. ASUS Sabertooth X58 MoBo, ASUS DVD Burner, ASUS NVidia GeForce GTS 450 1GB Video Card, 24 GB RAM, 2 3TB SATA 6 HD's. Dual booting between Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows Server 2008 R2. Using it for Hyper-V, prepping for my classes. i7 3.2 Ghz processor.

Although, if you intend on doing some video editing you might want to look into an i7.

EDIT: Just looked at your ram choice... That ram will not work as it's for Macbooks and 204 pin.

I finished my new work computer yesterday. It's a pretty massive upgrade over what im using right now.

For the past 8 years i've been using a P4 w/ 4 gigs of ram and windows XP.

My new Machine:

AMD FX 8350 8 Core
Asus MA97 MoBO
16GB Ram (Kingston)
EVGA Nvidia GTX 660
600 Watt Corsair PSU
Corsair H100i Liquid Cooler
240GB Kingston SSD
2GB Hitachi HD
2x Asus 48x DvD drives.
Thermaltake S31 Snow Case
Windows 7

I was amazed that it took all of 10 minutes to install Windows 7 and the drivers for both the MoBO and the Gfx card. I remember back when installing an OS was an all day kinda thing.

I'm getting pretty close to doing another build myself. Been running a Mac Pro for quite a while, but it's finally showing its age a bit. My current video card couldn't run the new Wolfenstein, and that pissed me off something fierce. So I'm building another Winbox.
