Are All Recreational Softball Players Douchebags?

Yesterday, I played in a benefit softball tournament for a motorcycle riding buddy of mine who got in a wreck and has been in a coma since June 30, to try to raise a few bucks for his girlfriend and her son with the bills etc. The guy had his liver removed, 1 lung, shattered pelvis, and 2 broken legs. He's only laying there, eyes open, sedated, while healing. finally responding to things...from a 'medical' condition but he's essentially in a coma with his eyes open at this point.

I have not swung a bat since 1994, and have not been involved in any sort of recreational sport since. The fee for this particular benefit was like $225 per team or something the equivalent of $$20/ish per person.

I was shocked and the number of douche bags that were there. There were 3....THREE mother ****ers there that played college baseball. They showed up completely decked out in full ****ing gear, talking shit to everyone.. Routinely cranking out 300'+ homers each time up to bat.......when their team is up by 15+ in the final innings when their opponents had only scored a single run. all but probably 2 teams were made up entirely of friends and family of the victim.....the the douche bags were on those two.

another douche bag example was three guys bitching and moaning about the $20 fee; and that they didn't like the color of their teams' t-shirts. One guy asked a general question of "this is bullshit...who's in charge of this bs"? I pointed to the the girlfriend of the victim and said "Over there. she's the g/f of the guy who's been in a ****ing coma for a month,, and who this tournament is for you ****ing douche bag".

I walked away; nothing escalated beyond that. and he didn't approach her.

I mean, JFC...you're playing a small little benefit with no ****ing 'prize' etc, to raise some bucks for her and her kid while he's trying to survive, and dudes roll out in full on beast mode. playing against 60 yrd old people on a team, and fattys like myself who were playing in jeans and motorcycle boots (having ridden down)

****ing pathetic. I've never seen such a large number of people in one gathering with so little perspective. Pathetic pathetic pathetic.

Which is odd, because a baseball swing is much different than a slow pitch softball swing. It took me a year to adjust out of high school before I became a good slow pitch hitter

There are some real douchey things that happen on the softball field that I have seen.
1. Going in hard at second
2. Lining a pitch back at the pitcher
3. Admiring a homerun
4. Running over the catcher
5 Teams that clearly should be playing at the highest level, playing in the D league.

I had a guy that worked for me that actually played professional softball.
I never knew there was such a thing but yeah. He had sponsors out the ass. One of his bats, (that a sponsor bought) was 700 bucks. It was made out of carbon and had some weird core that could actually shatter like glass if it was used incorrectly.
The dude was paid to travel on a team bus to go to tourneys all over the Midwest.
I thought that maybe it was fast pitch but apparently not.
These dudes didn't play on regular softball fields either. They were on regulation baseball diamonds.
Apparently the 'championship' tourney was played on a MLB field and they had tens of fans attend.

Nope. Not an option... it's mandatory.

This is the biggest thing that pisses me off about softball.

I've played in two different leagues. In both of them, the commissioner let teams that they knew should be playing in more competitive leagues sign up for the lowest level leagues.

Both teams I played on sucked bad (I'm not great but I was the one of two or three people on both teams who could consistently hit the ball), and I laid into a couple of teams full of "softball guys". We had one game where we were run spread after the 1st inning (had to keep playing until the 3rd) and the team started jacking home runs to talk shit about how shitty our team was and how they needed to do that to give us outs.

I embarrassed the shit out of several of them by asking them if they were proud of the fact that they signed up for the lowest level league and could beat the shit out of a team where most of the people had never played baseball or softball before. The shit talking stopped pretty quickly after that.

Methodists and Lutherans are pretty bad, Church of Chirst are horrible, Presbys are usually decent, as are the Catholics and Evangelicals. The Jews are so horrible they have to have their own league. But the absolute worst are those damn Southern Baptists.

We had two girls on our team that could jack a home run whenever they felt like it. (Like I said, three/four of them played on D1 college teams.) Shit, they all played the infield positions because they fielded better than any of us. It wasn't even remotely fair to the level of the league.

The blue didn't do anything about it?

hell, I hit a pitcher one time in my life, unfortunately the pitcher was a female and I nailed her shoulder. I stopped running to first to check on her and declared myself out on my own. She couldn't finish the game but turned out OK when I checked on her at the following weeks game. The other team was really cool about it.

Of course, this was 22 years ago before the sport really got douchy.

Dude...sliding in shorts? Are you ****ing serious? That makes you a double douche.

Heh, I had two girls on my team back in the day that could hit home runs. Should have seen the look on those idiots faces when they would go yard on them.

I will let some other moron play 3rd and I'll happily go play OF. OF is more fun in slow pitch anyways.
I preferred 1st base. You are involved in a high percentage of plays and you are less likely to get a liner right at your face. heh
